Police: Teens with high-powered weapons on rise

10:43 AM CST on Wednesday, January 25, 2006

By REBECCA LOPEZ / WFAA-TV

Powerful military rifles, the kind used against United States troops in Iraq, are increasingly being found on young teenagers in North Texas, police said.

The weapons are so powerful they could pierce some body armor, which has some officers worried.

"This is what we are facing here on the streets," said Mike Dupree, Dallas County constable.

High powered rifles, guns and ammunition were all recently taken from teenagers by Dallas County Constables.

"This is the clip of an AK-47 right here," Dupree said while he showed News 8 some of the confiscated weapons and ammunition. "These are hollow points right here."

Dupree said many citizens might be shocked out how easy it is for young kids to get a hold of the high-powered weapons.

"Oh sure, you can give a kid $300, $400 dollars and say, 'Here, go buy a gun,' and he'll be back in less than an hour with a gun," he said.

Erica Hernandez said she agrees after her 13-year-old brother was placed in jail after she said he was armed with a 9-millimeter handgun and robbed a local vendor.

"Thirteen-years-old and he got a hold of anything he could get a hold of," she said.

Some residents in Oak Cliff said they have seen more teenagers with guns as well.

"They get in a beef with somebody or an argument, they can just pop the trunk and take out guns and shoot," said resident Latasha Brown.

Recently, a 15-year-old Dallas girl was arrested and accused of robbing several banks over the last few months. Incidents such as those have authorities nervous.

"This type of fire power right here, you could stand off a division of law officers," Dupree said.

Law enforcement agencies said they are now targeting areas where there are guns and gangs in an attempt to get to the weapons before they end up in young hands.

Most of the teens in my area have access to (if not their very own) "high-powered rifles" - they hunt with their parents, and on their own, and do very well at it, thank you very much! I'd like to see the "big-city gangsta" type who'd take these kids on with his AK knockoff... I rather suspect that their .30-30's, .30-'06's, etc. would see him off rather quickly, and the result would be more a matter for the coroner than the cops!

Good thing for everyone that the gangbangers that the Rem 7400 they stole in burgularly last week is a whole lot deadlier than the 'pimp daddy' AK they traded it for today.

Maybe we just need some rappers to sing about bustin' caps with their .25s that they keep in their front pockets.

We need a law that prohibits those under 18 from buying long guns and those under 21 from buying pistols! If only we had such a federal law these thugs and robbers would be off to choir practice instead of living the 'hood life.

What, you mean we've had such a law since 1968? What, you mean before 1968 teenagers could buy guns through the mail and we did not have this problem?

How could this happen.

"The suspect had a Tech-9, an SKS Assault Rifle, and a shotgun. Which are some of the most deadly weapons on the street".

Texas SWAT. Court TV last night.

I laughed a bit.

The only way the cops....

will go into Oak Cliff, is when they are dragged screaming and kicking.........I won't drive through that area in broad daylight, armed.....chris3

+1, Peter. My money'd be on "Bubba" with his grandpa's thutty-thutty any day.

And where does a 13 year old legally get $400?

"This is what we are facing here on the streets," said Mike Dupree, Dallas County constable.
In the PDRK, the office of constable was abolished when the justice courts were eliminated in 1995. Constables were the ministerial officers of the justice courts and provided security for those courts. The chief constable was elected to his position. His jurisdiction was limited to that of his court's judicial district.

The last constable in Kings County was a regular Barney Fife. He had the absolute minimum training required to be a California peace officer.

How well trained are constables in TX? How do their duties differ from sheriffs?

I guess that because Grandpa gave me a M-1917 .30-06 Enfield when I was 12 that you could have labeled my niebhorhood, "Preteens with Hi-Powered Rifles".

I work in northern Oak Cliff and South Dallas. No need to wonder why I carry at all times.

We need more laws! Yes, all this is illegal already, but if we just make it 'illegaler', everything will be fine!!!!!!!

Apparently middle aged white Republicans go into the ghetto and hand out money for those kids to buy guns ... at least that's what BET keeps telling us.

when i was 12 i got my first gun and another whne i was 13 and another when i was 14 and so on i got rid of a few but am sitting at 6 when i am only 18 so i guess i am a teen still with a high power rifle right?

Its almost the equivalent of here in San Antonio. You have parts of town very similar and the Gang Bangers think they are so cool with thier AK4geries and the like. Its just as bad with our local news, teenager caught with assault rifle, etc.. etc.. etc.. and Im sure they got them legitimately too  because no gun dealer is ever shady and no one steals guns or buys them out of the back of a van down an alleyway, uh huh.

Of course they didn't, the only reason they need something semiautomatic is so they can spray and pray. I would like to see them with a decent bolt action rifle. That would be funny. :D At the range these guys crack me up at times, they really do. Anyhow, its because of these idiots and the same kind up there in Dallas, Houston has its share too that TX law enforcement to a certain extent do have a legitmate gripe, but the News Media makes way too big of a deal of it.

Its these folks though that I am worried about and why I keep tools handy for just in case.

Or be taken down with one well placed shot by a competent marksman.

Seriously, if a "division" of officers can't take down one teenager with an AK then I am going to stop paying my taxes.:banghead:

More proof that no matter what type of restrictions or regulations are put in place, people are still able to get their hands on guns.

I don't want to be argumentative, but it is possible. When I was thirteen, I babysat and cut grass, and made $400 dollars a summer quite easily. Legally. Of course, I didn't go spend the money on a gun off the street. I bought a guitar.

"This is what we are facing here on the streets,"

yeah, uh, facing. hmmm. hey, i got an idea. instead of whining about the situation and feeling emasculated because a tool can poke holes in your tough guy vest, just do your job and arrest the kids. sorry but i don't have alot of sympathy. maybe i would if cops were being downed by well trained kids with rifles every now and then but that's not the case. they pull over a kid, find a rifle in his trunk and promptly wet themselves. this is pathetic. well, with any luck all that stress and cholesterol will give him an early heart attack and make room for someone competent.

Out of curiosity, how many cops in a "division"? It can't possibly be as big as a military division (three infantry regiments, one artillery regiment, one each tank/track/LAR battalion plus many assorteds), so what does the term mean in LEO circles?

Remember the LA bankrobbers? Where no-one was able to get a headshot on them?

At 13, I amassed $400.00 at the time quite often. And that was in the early seventies when $400 bucks was considerably more than it is today. Worked in a junkyard "parting" old cars for ten dollars for a 12 hour day, hauled hay, cut yards, bush hogged and disked neighbor's gardens, even shoveled, errr, cow manure for fertilizing those said gardens....

Of course, after amassing said $400.00, I never had time to spend it, so it went towards savings for college and helping to feed my own family, and a "new" old truck to haul the fertilizer in. Learned early on that a truck not immediately washed clean after a manure run was destined to the rust pile PDQ. And yeah - it even financed a few guns to place deer and other game on the table.

I think I am beginning to see a MILD difference between a kid making a quick four hundred peddling drugs or stealing and one that has to earn a looong hard four hundred, though.

I think that was pax's point. I you read my post, you see that we both worked hard for our $400. Some of these kids may be getting $400 in a easier manner.
