My response:

RE: Amendment Number 1408 to DHS Appropriations H.R. 2892

Dear Senator "Ben",
I certainly hope you don't mind "Ben"... :).
I think you and I have a number of things in common i.e., hunt, fish, camp etc and I was told you knew my Uncle Sam Caniglia, District Court Judge...! And one day outside Cabela's in Omaha, we had a nice conversation about Deer hunting and how many shots you take before hitting anything ... :)... :)...LOL.

***As a pocket knife owner, I am extremely concerned about the recently announced Customs ruling, which wrongly interprets federal law and would prohibit the importation of many of the sporting and utility knives that I use and enjoy. Their overly broad and novel new interpretation of what a Switchblade is could make me a felon for carrying a simple pocket knife. Additionally, the economic impact of the ruling on the knife trade would be severe. Pocket knives utilizing assisted or one hand opening technology are the dominant share of the market, and prohibiting the use of the technology would force significant job losses, and the potential loss of entire businesses. This type of Federal regulation is totally unnecessary. I strongly urge you to accept Senators Cornyn, Wyden, Vitter, Crapo, Enzi, Merkley, Roberts, and Risch’s funding restriction amendment, Number 1408, to the Homeland Security Appropriations bill, that prevents Customs from implementing this ruling.***

At time’s I think our elected officials become over zealous with unreasonable legislation. And unforeseen ramifications result in the enforcement of unreasonable legislation! What if passage of this
‘homeland bill’ would lead to a Rancher or Farmer or Courier being arrested for carrying a pocket knife?
When I was 15 and I worked on a Ranch -Nenzel Nebraska- in the Summer of 1964, I carried a pocket knife so I could cut the bailing-twine when we were out feeding cattle. Today -at 62yrs old- in my Courier work I carry a pocket knife! I use the p-knife to open packages and inspect for damages when I pick up a freight shipment and I discover a damaged box of freight. I use it to cut fishing line when I take my grandson fishing; I use it to slice an apple when we have snack's while fishing...I suppose I could go on and on but I know-you-know how goofy and carried away some lawmakers can be or become!!!

Well, there maybe a chance I might/will become a hardened criminal if homeland security get‘s their ‘unreasonableness‘ into law…! You can not imagine how many times during the last 40 yrs of my life,
how often I HAVE HEARD A POLITICIAN SAY : ‘we did not see such unforeseen circumstances” while some one such as myself pays the price for those UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES that have HORRENDOUS UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES.

Please do not support this homeland security bill, because one day, if this horrendous legislation is not thwarted, you might see my face at the post office:

Whats happening to this country? These idiots are going to ban everything if they get the chance. Soon we wont be able to own a stinking tooth pick! Oh no, someone might hurt themselves better protect the sheeple.

This immediately makes me think about how the feds and states view Balisong knives. I am proficient with them and can do many neat looking twirls and openings but I can open a regular pocket knife just as fast. They are no more deadly than any other edged implement but everyone thinks that they might be more dangerous. I can get a fixed blade out faster than any other knife and use it more effectively with my current knife training that I received in the military. Go figure.

Greebe

Looks like good news.

Late Thursday, the Senate unanimously passed an amendment to the Federal Switchblade Act as part of the Homeland Security appropriations bill. The amendment, authored by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), changes the federal law under which one agency had tried to redefine many common knives as switchblades.

The measure would exempt assisted-opening knives that can only be opened with "exertion applied to the blade by hand, wrist or arm" from a federal law that criminalizes commerce in switchblades. Assisted opening knives are highly desired by hunters, anglers, farmers, ranchers, firefighters, law enforcement and emergency personnel and others who may need to open a knife with only one hand.

"The Senate sent a strong message and made clear that the 35 million Americans who own pocketknives are free to continue using them without the threat of federal agency intrusion," Sen. Cornyn said in a statement today. "While U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) proposed changing that, my colleagues joined in a unanimous, bipartisan effort to ensure assisted-opening pocketknives are protected by the law. What's more, the CBP reversal would have inflicted serious economic harm to sporting goods manufacturers and retailers."

In the same statement, Sen. Hatch said, "Without this amendment, there is a real danger that 80 percent of the pocketknives sold in the U.S. could be classified as illegal switchblades, which would hurt knife and tool manufacturers across the nation. The unintended consequences of the CBP's definition could be that state and federal criminal courts could construe Leatherman-type multi-tools equipped with one-hand opening features, as well as folding utility knives with studs on the blunt portions of the blade to assist with opening, to be illegal. That is absurd."

Thursday's Senate action puts us one step closer to passing this common-sense measure into law. The measure now heads to a House-Senate Conference Committee.

That's just the first step. We have plenty of opportunity to see this fall apart still.

That means we need to work with Kniferights and American Knife and Tool Institute to get this in the final version of the bill that passes the House.

Switchblades should be legal. Period.

It's just plain stupid that certain knives are illegal.

I doubt it makes any difference to most felons who tend to carry stolen black-market guns rather than knives. And a criminal could simply conceal a big, sharp & perfectly legal hunting knife. I guess that would violate concealed carry laws, but it doesn't seem like criminals care too much about laws which is sort of what makes them criminals.

That is not true...

...I challenge you to do the research...HAVING one is not illegal...in many states and under Federal law...

Just to dispel some myths about switchblades - 26 states permit possession and 18 of them permit carry. Check the sticky on these common pocket knives in NonFirearmsWeapons if you want to learn the truth about them.

Just wanted to point this out to you....This is in England...

Could you imagine being in England and posting on forums where you "cant wait to turn 18 to buy my first pocket knife...I think I'm gonna get a GERBER!"

Where here in the US...many of us talk about waiting until they're 21 and going out and buying their first handgun...or AR-15...or any other firearm! Hahahahaa

I wouldn't laugh too much. Unless we stay vigilant, that's the way things are headed here.

Yes yes, and our children will be wrapped in bubblewrap by our indoctrinating liberal school teachers before they are allowed to play on the playground at recess.
