Uberti vs. Pietta Cylinder

In my 1858's they will not interchange the Pietta cylinder is longer, was the same with a Kirst convertor fit the Pietta great and was to long for the Uberti.

I'll have to break out one of each but the Pietta was long enough that it won't come close fitting in the Uberti opening.

Depends on how old (manufacture date) the revolvers are. The oldest Ubertis I own have Pietta length cylinders, but the Piettas of that era, actually until recently, had narrower bolt slots. The top of the bolts were tapered to fit, and probably to time the cylinder alignment, as earlier pre-CAM Piettas were spotty as to machining accuracy.

That being said, the Pietta cylinder of today is .017 to .020 longer than an Uberti. The forged frame Ubertis also now have a larger diameter cylinder than the earlier cast frames, or the Pietta.

The parts discussed here are for Remingtons....

I recently purchased a R&D conversion cylinder for my Uberti Cattleman Carbine and found the timing to be slightly different and the hand was to short for the cylinder stops to lock in. I had some spare part kits for my piettas and was able to fit a hand to work with the conversion cylinder and the cap & ball cylinder, The hand for the pietta is slightly thiner than the hand for the ubirti, all of the parts are very close, the pietta hammer is slightly wider, not possible to use, the trigger could be used with some filling, and possible the cylinder bolt with some modifications, the uberti has a lip on the end of the bolt that the pietta doesn’t have. I think it may be there to aid in keeping foreign material out, the bolt spring will drop in and work although the pietta spring has a slightly longer finger on the trigger side. Just thought I would throw this stuff in, many of the parts are very close with in 1000s of a inch.
