The British police don't even carry firearms. They're an absolute joke. I remember 3 days into the London riots reading an article stating that the British police were considering using plastic bullets. LMAO...plastic bullets? Considering?

They're not an absolute joke. They're very brave men that are let down by a system, no, a whole ideology that allows the criminal more rights than the innocent. It makes me sick sometimes.

I agree. I have personally met a few former English policemen, and they have been, to a man, good solid folks. Some of them went on to become police and corrections officers here in the US, and have done well.

coming from the UK to the US very recently I find the discusion on why are the UK police no armed very intresting. Its true that the aveage beat bobby is not armed and the PCSO's are not armed either but, there is always armed response, now called conflict resolution officers, in the area or on call.
In the inner cities then the majority of police patrol cars will have CR officers in them. I use to work in a rural part of north west Wales and knew our CR officers due to applying for shot gun licenses and inspections and they knew of the responsiblity they carried.
I believe its as easy to get a fire arm in the inner cities ileagally as it is over here.
But the main difference which scews the figures is knife crime. Knife crime is far more prevlant in the UK.
This is a very biased view of someone now living in the US and use to live in "nice" areas.

From what I understand, when the media refers to "violent crime" they mean homicide. By their definition, the United States is more violent than the U.K. However, violent crime is defined by MANY crimes, not just homicide. But it isn't just other violent crime (-homicide) that is higher in U.K., but property crimes are much higher. So, there is a trade-off. In the United States, you have lower crimes in everything except homicide. In the U.K., you have lower homicide rates, but higher crimes in about every other category.

^ So what you're saying is that in choosing between the two, you have a classic conundrum. You can either live well, but maybe not as long, or you can live long, but in fear.

Gnaius Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great, or just Pompey to you Barbarianos) had a saying about that. To paraphrase: 'it is better to be a king to no one than a slave to anyone.'

:scrutiny: Didn't the Egyptians decapitate this guy in order to win favor with Gaius Julius Caesar? :what:
I guess Pompey didn't live in fear ........:p

No.

Your chances of being murdered in the US...provided that you are not yourself a criminal and do not hang out with criminals...are very very low.

Avoid drinking or doing drugs on Friday or Saturday between 10pm to 2am and getting into an argument over a drug deal, gambling debt or love affair with someone you've had conflict with before, and your chances of getting murdered in America are actually quite small. Although there is always a chance of a drug crazed car jacker or home invader.
