...or firearms that surprised you?

What I mean is, are there any guns you purchased that were not mainstream or you felt you were taking a chance on? Something that a gun snub would look down on but really ended up being a real gem.

For me it is a Smith and Wesson 908s. I was looking for something my wife would be comfortable to shoot but still had enough juice to do the job. She has shot my Glock 23 but has trouble getting a correct grip and combined with the recoil makes it difficult for her to shoot. Granted, more practice would help but it does get painful for her wrist. She has shot my Kimber but does not care for it either.

There is a downside to starting someone out on a 22LR pistol. She has become spoiled by the lack of recoil.

So I set out on a mission last fall to find something that would fit her hand in a 9mm. First thoughts were a Kahr or even a Sig. Something that would balance size with recoil. What I came across was this 908s. Thin grips, double action (first pull) and a decocker. Cheaper than the Kahr and way cheaper than the Sig.

I had pretty much ignored S&W since their sellout fiasco (Owned a .357 and a 44 mag revolver a while back, superb guns). But I knew they had new owners and were back to being an American owned Co (don't want to get into a political discussion about S&W. Everyone is supposed to have a chance to redeem themselves after being punished).

The wife loves the pistol (woo hoo) and shoots it more then I get to (D'OH). But that’s okay. The point was to have something that she would practice with in the event (heaven forbid) she would need to defend herself with it.

The only issue I had with it was the extractor. The lower edge was very sharp and dug into the casing as the slide tried returned to battery. This caused several failures to return to battery. A few minutes with a small file to round off the bottom edge cured the problem. I was rather annoyed this even had to be done but after owning several 1911's I am used to working with extractors.

I was afraid this was a bad sign but...man, this thing runs. It has never failed to go boom when it was expected to since working with the extractor. It has run side by side with the Glock and Kimber every time at the range. I had not had much experience with S&W semi-auto pistols before but this one is a keeper.

Anyway, I was curious if anyone else got more out of a gun then expected.

Steyr and Llama. I really like the Steyr S9 subcompact 9MM! I wasn't expecting much for the money. I am very happy. I see another Steyr in my future. M9. I have had two Llama 45s and a 38 Super. One 45 was their subcompact. They were more reliable than my two Springfields! I am an elitist though. A 45 ACP must say Colt to make me happy. I have shot RIA 45s and they impress me. I think they are the closest to a USGI 45. FEG makes a high quality clone of the Browning Hi-Power too. Nice bluing job.

Taurus 941 22mag

I don't own any inexpensive or cheap handguns, except for this little J frame sized Taurus 22 mag 4" revolver. I bought it from a fellow who fired only one cylinder thru it, before his wife ordered him to get rid of it. I got a great deal. I drilled the top strap and added a small JPoint red dot, slicked up the trigger (2.7lbs SA). This thing is small, light and is a real tackdriver. See the archives at gunblast.com, where Jeff Quinn also refers to it as having unbelievable accuracy. Anyway, this is my small game and varmint handgun. I don't go to the woods without it, even if I'm carrying something else.

I am on a Taurus expedition. Got a Tracker in .357 and it is a real gem. Then a PT-111 in 9mm, runs good but the trigger (DAO) sucks. Recently ventured into the PT-92 plain jane for testing - so far I am pleased.

Taurus, some love 'em, some hate 'em. I think they are on track to become a powerhouse through innovation. We'll see.

Desert Eagle baby in 9mm.

I bought it as a range gun only. I had fired (and really liked ) an Uzi eagle 40. I'm not a fan of the 40., so I figured that the 9mm in the same size was going to be a dream to shoot. It was.

After repeated use I found I really liked the feel of this pistol.

It continues to go to the range when I do.

And highly underated.

My pleasant suprises

Taurus 92/99 IMHO a finer weapon than the Berretas they copy and cheaper (but climbing)

Makarov- accurate & reliable, with a little work has a good trigger
and usually only about $150

Ruger 94 9mm I got because it had a cool look, shoots great and was cheap

Then there is the Colt 1911 the worlds best 1911 and most accurate;)
-Well it is April 1st...

I was told CHINESE SKS RIFLES ARE JUNK!

BACK IN THE EARLY 1990'S , I OFTEN HEARD DEALERS SAYING CHINESE SKS RIFLES ARE JUNK! WHEN THE RUSSIAN SKS'S CAME INTO THE USA , DEALERS SELLING RUSSIAN SKS'S WOULD OFTEN SAY: NO CHINESE JUNK SKS'S HERE, ONLY THE ORIGINAL RUSSIAN SKS'S, I USE TO HEAR PEOPLE REFFERING TO CHINESE SKS'S AND AK'S AS JUNK! ACTUALLY MY CHINESE SKS IS THE BEST $69.95 I EVER SPENT ON A RIFLE! CHI COM SKS'S MAY LOOK A LITTLE CRUDER BUT THEY SURE WORK WELL.

Savage 10/110 series rifles. Dad swore by his Savage 110, so I went out and bought a pre-Accu-Trigger 10FP in .223, stuck a Leupold base and rings on it and a cheapy Thrashco 3x9x40 "World Class" scope on it. Got less than $500 in the whole rig, makes pretty little ragged one hole groups if I do my part.

My CZ-75B. It's not under-rated here but your typical gun guy hasn't ever heard of them. My first pistol too, followed by a Glock 21 the next day.

It's still my favorite range gun... super accurate for a combat pistol. The price ($360 when I got it) can't be beat either. Well, except maybe Makarov's... gotta get one of 'em.

The Savage Over/Unders rifle/shotgun combo guns. If you could only have one...

I'm glad no one chimed in and said Jennings or Lorcin or another distinguished ( ) maker of firearms.

Anything single-shot is underrated, IMHO. I have a H&R "Topper" 12 gauge, and that will teach you patience and endurance at the same time.

My Marlin .30-30. I dont know if its just around here but I get alot've static about bringin a .30-30 to the range being a waste of time. I dont know how or why but apparently lever actions somehow became very innacurate..or so they tell me. Guy with an SKS told me that once noless.

I'll second Orion. I had a 9mm Firestar and it was a great little pistol. I wish I hadn't sold it.

Anything made by Norinco. Some of it has slight problems like the M14 clone's soft receiver. But for the most part, they run very well.

Took a Rossi m-720 on a trade. Had a box of ammo with it. It's a five shot, stainless, fixed sight,DA only revolver. I don't care for chrome or stainless guns, thought I had a good 'trade' gun. Took it to an IDPA match where they had a side match, playing cards on edge, split three cards in a row at seven yards!!! That was four years ago, still got it , I like accurate guns.

The Makarov (Baikal russian) and the Bersa Thunder 380. Guns under $200 make me nervous but these run great. I purchased them after browsing boards like this one.

Disapointments:
Kahr K40 (failure to function, as J-Lo would say GOBBLE GOBBLE)
NAA 32 (hurts hand, not accurate)
walther ppk/s (hurts hand, cut hand, firing pin broke)

Bersa .380. I've had one for carry for about a year and a half now, comfortable, accurate, and totally dependable. Replaced a S&W .38 snub.

This board is familiar with them but I've often run into, "what's that?" comments, even a holster manufacturer didn't know of the piece.

I bought the first one just for fun, looks, and the low price, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality and performance. I recently bought another one for practice and home defense, my wife liked it better than anything else I had to offer for her security when I'm gone.

I was at a gun shop the other night and a guy was shopping with his wife for a defense gun. I mentioned to her that my wife is a small gal like her and she really likes the Bersa .380. The guy made a face with a comment like how can you depend on a gun that only cost $225?

So, Bersas are inexpensive but not cheap. Its sad so many people can't understand the difference. I spent over five hundred dollars last summer on a PPK/S that was NO fun, hurt my hand, misfired, the tirgger was awful,. It was gone in less than a month. The Bersa for half the money was more than twice the firearm.

My two biggest surprises:

1) Savage 116 in .30-06
2) Bersa Thunder .380

Both turned out to be far more accurate and reliable than I had ever given them credit for.
