I sized some 9mm brass and put in dillon case gage to see if they passed which they did, then i tried some unsized brass and 5 out of 10 passed! Is this unusual? This is all range pickup brass.

I've had it happen with soft loads, that it does appear to fit the case gauge (Shooter's Box), but when I've tried to reload without running through the sizing die, the bullet pushes into the case with finger pressure.
Stout loads, and nearly all factory loads will "fit" in the gauge...but have to be pushed back out. Resize and go!

It would be if they came out of an SMG.

Brass expands when fired and some shrinkage occurs after ejection. Could be they were shot in a "tight" chamber and shrank enough to fit a gauge (one more reason I use the barrel of my gun(s) as a case gauge)...

The absolute best thing to use is your guns barrel ... just because a case fits some " Case Gauge"
that doesn't realy mean anything ... it just means that round will fit that case gauge ...
Your "gauge " will take some unsized ones ... that's not very encouraging at all ...

Take my advice , before you load up a quantity of ammo ... gauge the round in your pistols barrel .
Just because it fits a gauge , that doesn't mean it will fit your gun's chamber and throat dimensions . .
I wouldn't put all my trust in a "gauge " others have ... and had to buy another accessory ...
A Bullet Puller ! Don't do that ...
