I was shipping back a defective/unsatisfactory weapon to the distributor for a refund. I decided to wonder why it had been two weeks after delivery and had not received a confirmation of delivery. So, I check the tracking info, and the gun has been 'in transit' in the hub that is supposed to delivery it for the past, say, 13 days?

I have filed a claim with UPS. I'm trying to gather documentation of the value of the item. I'm pretty sure a serial number and proof of purchase from the distributor will suffice. I guess I could always see what my FFL would provide me as well. I still have the shipping receipt.

My question is: is there anything else I need to do or be worried about? I imagine it'd be one thing if they lost something from the QVC channel, but they lost a rifle...

Did you insure it? If not, why not? Having insurance on a firearm is a good 1st step towards getting situations like this resolved. Otherwise, you might be in for a fight...

UPS automatically insures up to $100 per shipment. Unless you purchased additional insurance when you shipped I don't think you have a hope of collecting more than that.

Good luck collecting the insurance, if you bought it. UPS isn't very good about honoring insurance claims.

Did you make a police report?
Putting in a claim to UPS doesn't get the gun on the national stolen item list.

man, that sux!

good luck, and keep us posted.

as others asked, did you buy the insurance? i always do, but have never had to file a claim, so i'm not sure how they are on paying.

just a thought, it's kinda hard to "loose" a package the size of a rifle. theft comes to mind....

From past experience(non-firearm), keep the pressure on them and as mentioned previously, file a police report and contact your local BATF office and ask their advice if especially it was a interstate shipment, I believe that the FBI investigates interstate gun theft also. Inform UPS of these contacts alsoKeep a log with all names and dates you have talked with, and possibly follow up all calls to UPS with a registered letter. In a nutshell be a royal PIA if necessary.

UPS Company Policy

"If you want us to ship your package, pay this much. If you absolutely want it to get there, pay us more. If for some reason it doesn't make it or is damaged, maybe we'll cover your losses."

The last time I used UPS to ship was when I sold a Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl IX Zippo lighter I sold on Ebay. That item also mysteriously went missing en route to the buyer. Apparently, UPS only "loses" collectible items and guns. I think they have an employee theft problem.

Just another reason that I NEVER ship UPS. I have heard way too many horror stories like this. I always use FedEx and have never had any issues.

fedex isnt much better to deal with on insurance claims either. with fedex you can collect up to $100 for the cost of the item, plus the cost of shipping, if you dont buy extra insurance. i sent a package that included brake rotors, spindles, and calipers that got lost by fedex, and it took 6 weeks to get the crap sorted out and get the insurance and shipping refund. i made several phone calls, sent several emails, and the recipient also made phone calls and sent emails to fedex to try and get them to fix the problem.

Yes, I informed them that it was a rifle; I am obligated to do so according to their policy. I shipped in the original box (plain, unmarked), so there were no conspicuous or advertising markings on the box to give it away on MY side of the handling. As to what they do once they throw it down the conveyance belt, who knows...

I read their insurance policies and insured it.

It was en-route to AIM, in Ohio, so yes it was an interstate shipment. It was checked into the Columbus hub a day before delivery and has not been shown as delivered since.

AIM has no record of receiving the gun. They'd have to know because they at least have to sign off on it to receive it.

I sent an e-mail to AIM notifying them that I had begun the steps to filing and collecting a claim. I have also e-mailed UPS, etc. I won't hear back from them until tomorrow since I e-mailed them Friday night.

I'm gonna go look up the local hub's (who I sent it through; i went to them directly) number and their corporate number and start making calls. I may also look up the Columbus, OH hub's number and inquire on the package number, if that may help.

I'll try to contact UPS first just to see how unhelpful they are. Then, I will go to the police and the BATFE.

I guess I'll take solace in that I'm not alone. This wouldn't have happened if I would have just stopped being so stubborn and had given up on Century one gun earlier

If you told them it was a firearm and insured it for the value, you will be ok. If not you won't. That's why when guys tell you to ship guns as machine parts, be prepared for the consequences. If you did that your out of luck, and really should keep it to yourself. Last sale I did cost me almost $200 for shipping packing, and insurance, but I wasn't going to take the chance of losing a $2000.00 rifle over it.

i think so too, my local ffl told me that ups lost a saiga and savage 308 that were supposed to be shipped to him, they were insured but ups wouldn't cover it.

Yea, I didn't do that. I do not think I insured it up for the full value, but close enough to where I'll get most of my money back, at least. I've given it some additional thought and will report it regardless first thing tomorrow.

I used to work in shipping for a mail order pharmacy, and we used FedEx exclusively.

You would be amazed at the number of packages that we had problems with.

The big wigs decided that the cost of insuring the packages outweighed the "small" chance that they would be lost/mishandled, so we would just reship the orders.

I remember one instance where I sent out a huge box of ready to inject syringes of a cancer med we had just started carrying, and the value of the package was right under $100k:eek: The package disappeared in tracking, and they could not locate it. Once I told them the value of the package, it mysteriously was found in the corner of the warehouse:rolleyes:

I could only hope I'm so lucky if I use the acronyms "FBI", "ATF" and the word "police report", but I doubt it.

I did a construction project for Fed-ex near Columbus. Stuff came up missing all the time. They tried blaming us, the contractors, but it never stuck. We purposly avoided active docks and never went where they were handling packages. The fence surounding the very large parking lot was littered with opened boxes and packaging. The most problematic items they were always asking about was porn related, seriously.

I know when you ship millions of packages even a 1% loss rate is good, but when you see that 1% in reality, it's still suprising. :scrutiny:

I went to pick up a Yugo sks from UPS a few years ago. They told me they couldn't find it. I asked them if I should go ahead and report it stolen to BATF and magically it appeared about 10 minutes later.:banghead:

Next time label your valuable packages "dung samples, bos primigenius: do not subject to heat or light." At least that will rule out employee theft.

Sorry for the trouble you're having, hope everything gets sorted out.

My dad ordered as case of .45's that showed up in an empty box from UPS. Once at work I shipped a $2500 surveillance camera for service, it came back broken, even though I had purchased insurance on it UPS would not honor it because they said the camera could have been broken when it was originally shipped. I don't trust UPS.
