I'm looking at a Ruger M77 Mark II SS chambered for 243 win. It has the Syn stock and has SS scope rings," scope stays with owner", Serial number shows it to be produced about 2004. From my understanding this has pretty well been a safe queen with near zero use. What do you think I should be willing to pay for it?

Nice rifles, had. Few over the years. ~$500 is about right. Most "hunting" rifles are low use guns. Inerited one from my father that looked rough from years of beiing carried through the woods, gun rack in the back widow of the truck, and on an ATV but I bet had less than 3 boxes shot through it.

As a general rule I say 50%-75% of what a comparable new gun sells for, depending on condition. www.budsgusnhop.com lists a comparable gun at $627. 75% of that is $470. I probably wouldn't go that high personally. Around $400-$450 on that particular gun.

They introduced the Hawkeye in 2006 with some minor improvements and a much better trigger. They changed away from the brightly polished metal to a matte finish in 2006 as well. I might go as high as $500 on a Hawkeye to get the better trigger. I prefer the matte finish on the stainless as well.

Hmmm ~$500...

I was just looking at a used .308 M77 mark II today, it had a thick shiny blackish finish on the barrel, receiver was somewhat more matte (could it have been bubba paint or is that what the factory finish is like?- rollmarks seemed intact), dark red wood stock with crisp checkering and rubber butt pad, minor blemishes/ small scratches all across barrel and stock.. Bore and action look very "not used" from what I can tell... less that adequate lighting at the gunshop made accurate assessment difficult, at the time I was inspecting it I thought I gave it a pretty good once over but now I doubt myself  Conclusion: Seems to fit the story of the "been around some time, hardly shot at all"

Trigger is a tad heavy and a wee bit gritty. Perfectly useable but definitely not target-like. Wish it were better

Here are my questions: What is the finish supposed to be like originally? What kind of accuracy can I expect from one of these? ANDare there aftermarket kits out there for DIY trigger improvement?

I know a guy that would sell me a M77 NIB unfired laminated stock stainless in .300 WM for $500. I passed.

Guess it depends on how bad you want/need it. I have no use for the Win mag.

I'm thinking I'll pass on this one. Asking on it is $500. I have a hard time going that high on anything with a Synthetic stock. This will be the first 243 win I own and load for and I'm thinking a Ruger American may be better suited for my needs at this point in time. They sell new for $329 and from what I understand they have a better trigger than the 04 MII. Perhaps down the road I'll take a closer look at the Hawkeye once I have some good pet loads. Thanks all.

I'll preface this post with: "I'm not a Ruger guy, generally." In fact, I own only one. Now, regarding a Model 77...

Quite a few years back I picked up via trade, a pristine, very early Model 77 with a tang safety, in .30-'06. I stuck it in the safe with the intention of trading it off, as the blue is gorgeous - deep and perfect, with no flaws. Even the trigger pull is crisp and light. It was in a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock, and the original stock was included. It's very plain wood with little figure.

Then I took it to the range. I was astounded with how well it shoots! Very decent, tight groups, no weird flyers at all! So, I stuck a Leupold 2-7 on it and it's still in my safe. It has been an excellent rifle over the years. I'm still planning on refinishing the stock to make it a little nicer.

They may not be expensive, but occasionally you're going to find one that really shoots well. Unfortunately, you won't know that until you get it to the range.

I guess that in most cases, I like old better than new. The American is newer and I don't know much about it. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I also have a tang safety 77 in 30.06. Great rifle. Shoots just like yours out of the box. I keep hearing the bad press but my old m77 is just fine. I also had an ultralite 77mk II in 257 roberts that shot like a pin.
