Excerpt;
"I'm going to buy 5,000 Dragunov rifles from Russia ... with telescopic sight, the best in the world, with infrared night-view," Chavez said during his weekly Sunday broadcast held on a beach along Venezuela's eastern coast.

Not a very long article, can be read at above link.

You Mosin owners may have to compete with Hugo for surplus ammo.

You would think with all this increased demand for ammo, there would be an increase in supply soon. I keep hearing of ammo shortages and ammo prices going up. I understand that the material for making ammo has gone up in price but the cost of material is only a small part of ammo costs. How do I know this for fact? Simple, a box of 9mms cost me $5.00 a few years ago but a box of .32acp cost me $12.00. There is more material in a 9mm than a .32acp.

Anyway, Chavez wants to start a guerilla war with the U.S. He thinks he can beat us in hand to hand fighting. He probably could but why would we fight him in the first place? He is a nut job. I wish all these stupid dictators would stop buying all the freaking ammo and surplus guns so we can get back to taking advantage of the end of the cold war. My guess is Putin is stirring up trouble so he can sell them some military gear.

Let's see,

Personally, I think the Dragunov is awesome. If that darned gca of '68 wasn't an issue, we could have them almost everywhere like SKSes, or at least more of them. I just hope that some of these might be able to make it someday to the US Civilian market.

Oh, and by the way, it's not a sniper rifle. It's a designated marksman rifle.

If I was going to buy me a sniper rifle, 7.62x54 wouldn't be high on my caliber list. I'd prolly stay with my .308 or '06. And I also think Druganov's are just over-rated because we can't have them.

SVD's are not meant to be employed like the M24 or M40 systems they are meant to be used as a SDM rifle. the russians never fully adopted the "Hunter" style sniper we use here in the US. Russian snipers of all wars worked more as a tool of the squad/

I'm not sure if you folks are aware, but 7.62x54r is used to this very day by the Russian army (and anyone else who buys their weapons from Russia). One of their machine guns uses this ammo (oh, and I guess their sniper rifle does, too).

It's not a question of 'surplus drying up', it's a question of 'when will the feds let more into the country/'

Sorry, SVD is not accurate enough for my purposes. Fine as a DMR, as long as you don't plan on shooting over 500 yards. It's a 2 MOA gun at best.

Chavez is just the latest banana republic. Give him another decade or so and I am sure he will be run up a flag-pole by the same army he is building right now.

Gun Tech, tell that to my M39 that shoots garbage 50's bulgarian sub 1MOA most of the time.

Feed it some of the recent russian stuff and its as accurate as any 1903 I've ever shot.

My point is that 7.62x54R is a respectable round with similar ballistics as 3006.

I have a question for the Canadians who frequent this forum...are Dragunovs available in Canada?

I did not mean to hijack the thread, but Hugo's recent purchase made me wonder :).

Thanks,
LeonCarr

Are all these fancy new toys going to the army proper, or some sort of shadow army that's intended to keep the real army in line?

Hugo Chavez is not very popular in his home country. This might not be sabre-rattling towards the US (or if it is, it might be of incidental benefit to him), but a reminder of who's boss there.

I can't figure out why the hell we can't have them. It seems to me like they have a sporting purpose. And you can get both chinese and russian ones in the .308!

The same reason why we can't have Ak47s from Russia but we can have then from half a dozen other countries. A few real Russian ones got in, in 1990, but most non sporting firearms from Russia have been banned since the early 90s and this was continued with the banning of all non sporting firearms a few years ago and they class both these rifles to fall under that category.

The big problem for them I would think is getting match quality 7.62x54r that they are designed to use like the 7n14 ammo so unless you reload you aren't getting the best out of them with the ammo you normally find.

Let us pray that Hugo Chavez wants to sell it to us as surplus goods. I'll give him $750 for one, NIB, with all accessories.

Or better yet, that Chavez and his socialist thugs get kicked out by someone who doesn't get their jollies by telling the world how horrible the US is to them, even though their economy rests almost entirely upon petroleum exports to the same, and that that someone turns around and sells us those drags and the AKs Chavez bought a bit before that!

There are couple points - 1st, from what i know, Chawez also bought an ammunition plant
2nd, there's not that much open plains in Venezuela, from what i know, and for jungle warfare with limited visibility SVD is hard to beat. And, you can affix a bayonet to it if you ran out of ammo ;)

I spent 15 minutes on google looking to see what firearms laws are like in Venezuela. Some sources say absolutely no guns are allowed, one Venezuelan on a blog said of course you can carry guns, I just don't want to. Hmmm...

is the dragunov a real sniper's rifle, or is it a designated marksmen's rifle?

i shot one, can't say i'm all that impressed with the platform (accuracy and consistency). problably pretty reliable, tho.
