Venezuela to Buy 5,000 Russian Sniper Rifles

By Western standards, it's more of a designated marksman's rifle. It'll do the job out to 600 meters though.

"We will knock out any imperialist that approaches."

Saber rattling and chest thumping. Makes the serfs and subjects feel safe because the gub'mint has taken steps to ensure the safety of one and all. (Sound familiar?)

There was a story once...can't document it...about an order to an American company from Russia with love...for 5 million condoms. They specified that they wanted them to be 3 inches in diameter and 12 inches in length. The American company made them to the Russians' specs...and shipped them in gross quantities marked: 144 condoms. Size: Medium

Ha, I remember hearing that story told.

On the surface, it sounds like venezuela is doing a good thing and trying to ensure the future safety of its country. I don't know what individual gun rights are like there, But i think that in some ways the same rules of civic duty that make a person a good citizen, including being prepared, could help make a nation a good nation. Maybe this way, when Venezuela has a crisis, they won't come crying to us about it, the way so many countries do. The last thing the world needs is another country calling in American soldiers to clean up foreign messes.

And if Venezuela dislikes a lot of what America is doing, so what? They're not going to invade us, I don't think. They're just trying to look tough for their neighbors. I'm more worried about the US getting taken over by Mexico.

It's pretty sad a socialist punk like Chavez can buy 5,000 new-in-the-box Dragunov rifles from Russia yet us capitalists are not allowed to. It just isn't right!

Dragunov innacurate?

The Russians expect 1/3 moa from them, or they go back to the armourer.

Sharps shooter you are good at heart, but so ****ing wrong there. Chavez 'registered' everyone who voted against him and compiled a massive black-list of people who are now unemployable. The 'citizens' he is giving the rifles to are purpose-chosen politically-motivated guys and gals called 'Chavistas' who's #1 duty is to make sure Chavez gets what he wants. Last coup attempt some parts of the military didn't go along with his pathetic ass (he had the easiest job and still ****ed it up), so he's arming groups that answer only to him.

It's a familiar pattern, Hitler, Staling, Caesar, etc. Take a wild guess whether he plans on ever losing an election.

there's not that much open plains in Venezuela
Venezuela is full of flat open area. As armed bear showed us. The Venezuelans, will be just fine employing these, they have a lot of vegetation for concealment on those plains. But they wouldn't hold a candle to the US in conflict.

Rego that's possibly true, with increased variances from ammo and shooters, etc. But, and this is just my observation, when Russians talk about 'effective range' they are talking about exterior ballistics, not terminal. So they probably don't have much plan to use them at 600m. I don't have much knowledge of Soviet-style armies except for movies and a couple organization tables, but it looks like they keep the shooter right along with everyone else in the squad.

Hippie, just a theoretical point, and a moot one, but exactly which US politician would ever allow an island invasion against an enemy as armed as Venezuela, in this day and age? Success, failure, right, wrong be damned it's never going to happen because the politicians are the weakest link now.

@Lucky

Wow. I had no idea what their standards for accuracy were!

The range is 100 m; the sight is set at 3. Firing is conducted from
the prone position with support. To test-fire and zero a rifle, use
should be made of cartridges with ordinary bullets having a steel core.
Fire is conducted with knife bayonet removed. Upon firing the shots,
examine the target and arrangement of hits; determine accuracy of fire
and position of the MPI. The sniper rifle fire accuracy is considered
normal, if all the four hits are arranged within the circle, 8 mm in
diameter.

Is this some strange phrase? Venezuela is on mainland South America.

Brazil is allied with us. Not sure about Colombia, Ecuador us wrapped around our financial finger...No one running for '08 would even invade given the current circumstances, but those could change. My point was he could buy 1,000,000 sniper rifles and his little country is not much threat to the united states. I imagine it would be similar to Grenada.

Chavez reminds me a lot of Elvis: Poor hick white boy hitting the big time and big money.

Modernize his army my posterior. He already has C.A.V.I.M. making FAL's, copied CZ75 clones and ammo for him, why is he kissing Russian rear end by making licensed copies of the AK47??? What the heck kind of modernization is this???

Chavez calling for revolution and throwing $$$ around, the Chinese in control of the Panama Canal, Daniel Ortega making a comeback in Nicaragua and an open Southern border has me really, really worried.

He could destabilize the entire region if he ever got his act together and decided to fully fund leftist guerrilla movements in South America with his oil money. Then we might be sucked into a proxy war with him. He could be a major threat to the west if he joined forces with Iran.Chavez his very popular now in the region because of his strong dislike of America. He is even very popular in the Northeast because he donates oil to help heat poor families homes in the winter. Many of my neighbor have a strong liking for the man because of this and his dislike of Bush.

Chaves is buying friends over Southamerica. He wants to be the new Castro. Talking on guns I wonder how many will end up in Colombia's guerrilla.

The first thing Hillary will do when she is elected is start a war, to continue the Democrats' legacy of intervention and show that she is tough.

She said she'd use tactical nukes in Pakistan.

So, I wouldn't eliminate the possibility of war in South America.

Well I don't think we're gonna be competing with him for ammunition, at least as long as the BATFE is refusing to permit any Form 6 ammunition importations into the US.

I'd rather have a Barrett or a SR-25. The insurgents/communists can keep their ugly cheap POS designs. ;)

Don't sweat it

You have freedom of speech to protect your second ammendment rights.

Or, is this one of those "reasonable" restrictions I keep hearing people talk about. Like banning felons from owning guns.
