I'm looking to add a foregrip to my AK. My goal is to mount one as far back as possible without significantly interferring with 30rd mags.

This is what handguard I used (except black):

(This handguard fits akward, but I can't complain for $16. Very tight, must be a file-to-fit.)

My first preference for a VFG is the Ace "K" grip (like on an MP5K) but I'm not quite sure how short it is. Either that or I'm going to buy a simple UTG foregrip for $20 and hack it to size. I'm not going to pay big bucks for a Larue stubby or likewise.

Is this just an exercise in futility? Should I just go back to the Romy G grip?

Let me guess, the canted vertical grip? I don't think so...looks and probably feels goofy. Plus I don't have a side rail to mount it on. I knew about the TangoDown stubby before but I can't think of any reason it should cost $55; plus I find it fugly. I know Krebs is quality stuff, but it's out of my price range. I think paying $35 for the "K" grip is stretching it. I'm out of work right now so I'm not doing much shooting, but I want a neat, short VFG as a finishing touch.

I prefer the broom handle VFG from TangoDown, but I don't hold it like a broom handle.
I hold it more like a pistol grip with my index finger pointing towards the target.
I push the grip further forward than most.
I do this for better balance and control when running the sound suppressor and a drum.

Why not just hold onto the magazine?

On the off chance that Ivan Drunkowski double charges or misses a charge when loading up ammo, do you really want your hand in the primary direction the KABOOM is gonna travel?

Really bad advice, imho.

exactly, the mag hold is comfortable and handles nicely, but I'm a bit paranoid of a kaboom.

Fixxxer, that CAA foregrip looks like the ticket at a nice price. Guess I just like the aesthetics of the Ace "K" grip quite a bit more. I assume they are about the same length.

Well, you pays your money and takes your chances... Mil surp ammo at least is never going to be accidentally loaded with pistol powder or have a cartridge case that's been reloaded more times than Carter has little pills.

I figure the top cover is more likely to seek orbit than the mag is to blow out. Besides, it's my weak hand anyway.

I do refuse to shoot without eye protection.

ETA: I shot a match last weekend where we had to shoot thru 4 ports in a barricade. For safety/muzzle control the muzzle had to be inserted into the port. I didn't think about where I had my weak hand but the pics prove that I was using the mag as a grip. The lowest port was a killer, too. BSW

Or just mount the VFG further forward. It's less comfortable feeling but makes for better, more effective muzzle control and speed. As an added plus on the AK, it's less likely to get in the way on a mag change.
