I believe it is after looking up some on google images, I know little about these except that they are much weaker than modern 45-70's and will have serious problems with hot loads.

Specifically a 1884 model Springfield. It has the broader breechblock (earlier models had a arched breechblock). The sights are the Buffington style which was adopted during those years-the Buffington sight was criticized for being more a target sight than a military sight because it was moved too easily out of setting by being jarred. The last model Springfields had a curved peice which helped to protect the sight from being moved accidentally (especially on the carbines because of the scabbard issue).

The stock if it has been thinned, might be a cadet's rifle. Some of these were altered from government stock and sold by companies to military schools and the like. When these rifles finally went obsolete various companies also assembled them from remaining parts and sold as novelty and hunting rifles.

If the stock is unaltered and its full length, it's a infantry rifle. The load it fired was the 45.70.500.

The buttplate should be solid if it started as the rifle. Might very carefully take it off, as soldiers of the era often wrote names, unit & company numbers and etc under the buttplates.

Incidentally if you chose to shoot with it be careful with the extractor-it was a problem with the design and after more than a century the metal might be a bit fatigued.
