Visiting Austin Tx - Gun Stores?

McBride's has a huge inventory, but they are pricey. You can sometimes get a decent deal on a used gun by bargaining -- the salesman will have to ask "Mr. McBride" (spoken in reverent, hushed tones) to approve.

As for sightseeing, it depends on what you're interested in. There's a nice big Texas history museum in the government area near the capitol. And the Legislature is in session, if you like circus acts. (You know you're in Texas when the capitol has big signs banning smoking, but if you show a CHL, the troopers wave you right through security -- concealed handguns welcome!)

Cabela's has a better selection than McBrides. I would go there.

As far as food, breakfast tacos at Dan's Hamburgers on Lamar is good, the Omlettrey(sp?) is also good for b'fast.

Lunch...County Line BBQ on the lake, Hut's Hamburgers on 6th St., Piranha Killer Sushi by 2nd St. or the Hula Hut on Lake Austin Blvd is good.

Dinner...Chuy's (get there early), Sushi Zushi in the Domain, Ruth Chris Steakhouse on 6th are just a few of the food places.

Have fun!

Thanks for all the recommendations! I added them all to my address book.

Any kick ass places for an amazing texas steak in Austin?

I live near Austin. Are there any Pawn Shops that aren't ridiculous on their prices?? No hijack intended!

I think the winner for local steak competition was Ruth Chris which is a laugh as it is a chain - but a high end one.

Eddie V's does steak - pricey.

McBride's does have a touch of the holy gun shrine for the good ol' boys atmosphere - :D

Depends on the clerk you hit. Some are very nice - some are posturing folks. But's fun to browse. Cabela's is fun too, if you can get the time to drive there.

Don't know the pawn shops - the best prices are at the Saxet shows, if you are in town when one hits. Google Saxet.

Ended up at Cabela's then I had Smitty's Market BBQ in Lockhart. Damn that place was awesome. Not sure what I'll hit for dinner tonight yet.

Ha! I had forgotten the name, but Yep (echoing GEM), it was a Saxet show in Austin where I bought my first pistol (and one I'm glad I started with -- Ruger 22/45).

Re: Steak -- sadly, a long-time favorite steak place there went out of business several years ago. Dan McLusky's on 6th Street was fantastic.

Ok, I'll be the kill joy.

We're not a food and travel forum so let's keep focused on firearms instead of the fried chicken.
