I am mounting a Vortex Viper HS 2.5x10x44 with a 30mm tube on a Remington 700 long action. I want to use Talley Lightweight Aluminum Scope Mount, but what is the right height and do I need an extended version?

Seems like low will work, but extended or not?

Will the low work with Butler Creek Flip Up Scope covers?

You need medium height.
Ok, but are you basing that off of you having this setup or?

Talley says low for their light weight ones.

I ask Vortex about just rings not the Talley ones, but they said medium rings.

Talley low rings only clear 32mm bells on 600 and 700 sctions. I use that scope on an AR on a picmount with GG&G rings so I can't help you on that specific scope on a 700 BUT like I said Talley lightweight low rings won't clear most 1" 40 mm bells.

I looked at Vortex's website and well the scope has a 44mm objective, but the outside dia is 2.03" or 51.56mm. I think the outside dia is what counts.

I ordered the mediums.

Naturally, the Objective end of the scope needs to sit slightly above the barrel (with covers installed), but don't forget to look for 'bolt clearance' at the other end as well.

Consider how/where the scope will be mounted to provide proper eye relief (in relation to YOUR cheek weld).

Then look at the eyepiece and be certain the bolt (when fully lifted and retracted) will clear the eyepiece and still provide you a good grip.

I've seen more than one arrangement that required taller (than desired) rings/mounts because the bolt 'throw' would not have cleared otherwise.

Handy charts for determining ring height to provide clearance between the Objective Bell (including scope cover, if used).

But does NOT address the possibility of needing a higher ring/mount assembly to provide clearance for your bolt throw.

It might not be an issue with your rifle, as the bolt handle 'lift' (or shape) might be an angle that does not create a concern.

But as general information...(for anyone else reading this), make sure the diameter of your scope (at eyepiece bell) is not protruding into the path of the bolt throw (as mounted on the rifle).

Otherwise, you'll need to modify/change the bolt, or use a higher set of rings/mounts to get clearance. Usually, the 'knob' of the bolt handle is the problem.

I have the HS-T 4-16X44 with low talley rings. The height is fine for the objective lens BUT not for the eye piece with a 30mm tube. The bolt is very close. I would like to move the scope farther forward but the eye piece hits on the base. The mediums will clear and give me a tad more eye relief. I have medium rings waiting to go on..

This is on a long action Rem 700.

The Talley Lightweight Aluminum Scope Mounts in medium worked for my Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 with a 30mm tube on my Remington 700 long action with Butler Creek flip up scope covers.

Lows would not have worked.

I've got that same scope on a Weatherby short action w/ a Bartlein #4 barrel and I used DNZ Hunt Master 2 piece mounts w/ integral rings Medium height. After trying a lot of different base/ring combos on all different rifles and actions...DNZ Hunt Master's are all I use now.
