I agree, it's not worth half that IMO.

Looking for more info on the bipod, I stumbled upon a bullpup conversion for the VZ.58 (as best as I can tell, it's an experimental variant never put into production). Normally I don't care for conversions, but being a striker fired rifle, I think it might work pretty fair. Does anyone know anything about them?

EDIT: In hindsight that bullpup sounds like a *really* bad idea (likely why it was never moved to full production); the ejection path is up and out, and in a bullpup configuration that big ole hole where those spent cases originate would be right at your nose. I think I'll pass and stick to the M17S, SRS, and others of similar design. Again, I have discovered that bullpups don't really work well unless designed as such from the ground up. Twas an ugly booger anyway...

:)

I agree the cost of the bipod is way out of my budget. A hard core collector item I guess. Would be nice to have if the price goes down (way down). The feet look alot like an fn- fal bipod. I think ill start looking for an off the shelf lightweight bipod and weld an old bayonet lock to it. As for the bullpup, it would take one heck of a brass deflector to make it work. my folder is nice and short and lightweight anyway and I like the full open top design. It makes it all but impossible to hang brass.

Picked up this nice-looking Vz2008 last month at the local gun show, came with a mag, bayonet, sling and cleaning kit...

I've already replaced the slant brake with a muzzle nut, I eventually would like to get the CNC Warrior brake that is similar to the Slovak one as back in 1993-94 I was on a military liaison team in Bratislava and Trenčín in the former Czechoslovakia and spent some time training with the 3rd Regiment of their Special Forces, who used the Vz58 with the folding stock.

Speaking of which, I just got a folding stock from someone on another forum and was able to install it (thanks to a 12" heavy-duty screwdriver I have!) but the stock is wobbly both open and closed. Any way to fix that?!?

Unfortunately, I have still yet to shoot it. I've been on the road a lot for work (I'm now a DoD contractor) but I was able to go to this month's gun show and bought three more mags and a mag bag for it from the same vendor. Hopefully I'll be able to get it to the range this Saturday! :neener:

Cheers! M2

Agreed. No reason to clog that big hole...the folding stock will do just fine.

M2, my folder is extremely tight, and I've seen others that locked up tight as well, so yours is out of spec. I think the only way to fix your problem might be to swap the locking button out for a new one as it sounds like yours is badly worn and beyond it's usable service life. If I'm not mistaken Czechpoint-USA sells replacements.

:)

Hurray, I get to join a club. My apologies for only being a VZ2008, but I like it thus far.

Only one reason to apologize...that's if it doesn't run right, and if that's the case it's CAI's responsibility not yours. From all recent accounts, I doubt that will be a problem. I would, however, make sure that the locking piece is installed. While I would be seriously surprised to hear that they left it out, there is at least one account by someone that stated that their rifle was missing this vital part and it's absence was not discovered till firing...which destroyed the rifle, but fortunately left the shooter unharmed (which says a lot for the platform!).

nice 2008s m2 and 68wj, nothing wrong with owning a cheaper version of a vz58/vz2008 heck i used to own one, and did a comparo a while back here. man if cia only used the original barrels and just added a permanent brake on them now they really would have somethin. wonder what they did with all the barrels form all those parts kits:(

M2
I have that cnc warrior brake on mine and its well worth the money, works well and they do a good job on the finish. The inside is a little rough but its not an issue for me. as for the folder, mine was so tight it took about a week of opening and closing to loosen it up. I would try to take the hinge apart and peen or sleeve it before I bought one, never know you may see a way to fix it, and Its worn out anyway so it couldnt hurt it. Welcome to the club .

I read about the user with the missing lug. I try to familiarize myself with what each part of a machine does before using it. This was no different and it was interesting to learn how the parts interacted during firing. Everything got a light cleaning and oiling before a quick range trip. All the magazines I have feed well and the bolt locks open when empty. The sights need some tweaking though. Overall it is exactly what I was looking for and the price was right. It won't replace the 6.8 AR in the photo, but adds some good character to the pile.

Rocinante, somewhere in the middle of GA, in the Maconga region. ;)

The VZ-2008s are a CIA (Century International Arms) build and use used surplus parts whereas the D.Technik/CSA (Czech Small Arms) guns use new (though some are surplus) parts. This largely accounts for the cost differential. Off the top of my head the mechanical differences are as follows:
  • Finish (CIA has a low-gloss parkerized finish, CSA has a semi-gloss epoxy coating)
  • Barrel (CIA comes with a US made 16+" bbl, CSA comes with a mil-spec 15.4in. bbl)
  • Bayonet Lug (CIA comes with one, CSA does not)
  • Trigger Group (CIA utilizes a double feather spring, CSA has only one)
  • Safety (the CIA flips in the "wrong" direction)
  • Furniture Options (CIA is available with folder or fixed stock, CSA is also available with a thumbhole sporter stock)
  • Muzzle Device (CIA comes equipped with a removable slant-brake, CSA with a "permanently attached" muzzle extension)

Overall the CSA is closer to the original design and with a much better CS dept., but is about twice as costly. I'm happy with my D.Technik, but I can't say that the CIA is a bad rifle either.

:)

vz2008 barrel is .308 in diameter
vz58 military issue, and CP barrels are true .311-.312 diameter and both are cold hammer forged and chrome lined, not sure if the vz2008 are cold hammer forged or chrome lined, i highly doubt it..but if anybody can confirm, would be great info added to the vz 2008 owners.

Not sure about the forging, but Century's barrel is not chromed. The US made barrel and receiver gives a little freedom with muzzle devices and magazines.

I don't know about CSA being closer to the original with no bayonet lug , plastic trigger parts, and welded on muzzle extsion, but they are a high quality rifle with a chrome lined bore, and very nicely finished. I'd say both are tied for being closer. The VZ2008 has a green mountain non-chrome bore , but many people have ran many thousands of rounds with out an issue. Why are Century's VZ2008 so cheap ? I had heard they bought the kits years ago in bulk for around $10 each and sat on them until they could reverse enginner a reciever.

I like it too, but no really good muzzle brake is bad to shoot. It breaks hand, the charge has a really great performance

Another option, I opted for an Ohio Ordnance Works rifle, you can have them in standard or tactical. It has a proper milled and heat treated American reciever, the original barrel, choice of muzzle extention or they will weld a brake on if you send it (I sent in a cnc warrior brake). It has steel trigger parts and a bayonet lug. They use enough US parts that you can use any magazine. Down side, cost about $1200. I still think it was a good purchase and those folks are good to deal with.

Hey Roc ;)

I slugged my VZ2008 barrel and it came out as .308 in measurement.

This isn't new information and what it does is it affords reloaders with a bunch more bullet options as opposed to .310+.

kyron4, you may think that the cp vz58 and vz2008 are close to being tied for being closer.... sorry i dont think so but thats just me, and having owned a vz2008 does not even come close. but its a good cheap version of the vz58 if you chose to buy one. dont know if this has been posted already, but for the CP owners enjoy, pretty cool to owning a close to a real vz58 on our shores:cool:

Hmmm here's another picture of the one I own.

th_IMG_1479.jpg

The spring was added by me to keep the sear in place.
The rifle is marked as a CZH2003

I believe it's a military receiver with the block in front of the trigger welded in to prevent the full auto parts from fitting. Some things from the parts kit, like the trigger, needed some grinding down to fit into place.

CSA is importing into Canada now as well. There are others too, like FSN and CZ.
It's confusing at times. Not sure what the difference between all them are. Some offer the rifle in different calibres, others in different wood sets. None come with muzzle brakes, but are threaded for them.

CZH2003 means its made by Hermex(distant succesor to Zbrojovka Praga), first company that made semiauto vz.58 for Czech.
Generaly just surplus rifle with no changes besides cripled trigger mechanism. Thats why it costs about $250.

lone-wolf, that is an interesting iteration. Glad we have Bohemus on board because that one had me stumped. Any import markings (Marstar?) on it?
