Walmart Ammo Selling Policy

I went into Walmart yesterday to buy a box of 44 mag ammo. The clerk asked for my pistol permit, which I gadly showed her. I bought the ammo and then asked her why she needed to see my permit. She said you have to have a pistol permit to buy pistol ammo. I replied that many rifles also shoot the same rounds as pistols. Are you saying that if I have a rifle that shoots 44 or 9mm ammo, I can't buy it without a pistol permit? What if I have a rifle that shoots that ammo but no permit? Her reply was "can't buy it without a pistol permit. She also said that was a Walmart policy, not any governmental thing. Can anyone put some reason into this?

"Pistol permits" are an evil thing. Glad Florida and other Free States don't have 'em........

Our local Wally's will check a buyer's age to make sure to not sell 'pistol' ammo to someone under 21, but I haven't met that category in decades.......

Its kind of the other way around but I bought .22 at walmart not too long ago and they asked if it was for a pistol. It wasn't so I told them so but it still can be used in a pistol. This was before the AZ shooting though.

Last time I bought ammo at Wally World was a year or so ago. They didn't ask me about a pistol permit.

When I was 18 I was buying some 44 mag as well and was asked if it was for pistol or rifle. This was in a small sporting goods store in Alaska like15 years ago. Guess the feel good law said you must be 21 to buy handgun ammo. So of course I told her my S&W model 29 was a rifle.

that's odd, around here the clerks at WM are experts in all things firearms-related and always have the time and desire to explain the policies forced upon them by the text displayed on the register

My best guess would be that the clerk just didn't have any idea what they were talking about. I would go to the customer service area of that store and see if its posted anywhere. Usually they post their store policies up there, like no ammo returns and such. Found that one out after buying some steel cased TulAmmo my local range wouldn't let me shoot. Return policy wasn't posted anywhere near sporting goods. And here I thought walmart would take literally anything back. If it is a new policy stemming from the AZ shooting it will more than likely blow over in a few weeks

Wally World in Texas asks if it is "for a pistol". I think that it is in register software that gives them the prompt. If you say "yes" it will not allow the transaction to proceed.

I love just saying "Yes" especially when it's 22lr cause then it's the truth. You can tell the gun guys in the sporting goods dept, they don't ask. I remember when some laws, company policy, or something changed at our local Walmart. I was buying bulk 22lr when I was 15, but I remember being 16 and they wouldn't even let me buy BB's. The guy at the counter might have been the only change, you never no. I have to say I've never had them ask for my permit before.

I don't think I've ever been asked for an ID card of any kind at Wally in Texas, or asked if it was for a handgun or rifle regardless of the ammo I was buying, but I haven't bought ammo there in a year or so.

It must be a NY thing, my local walmart just asks if it's for a pistol. This is only because you have to be 21 for pistol ammo and 18 for rifle ammo. I usually say machine gun.

I buy walmart ammo all the time here in mississippi - they don't ask me anything about pistol or rifle. They still restrict sales to six boxes though...

That's odd, my local store lifted the box restriction now that supply is back up. But, they've been asking age since I can remember. Maybe it's up to the discretion of the store manager.

They don't ask those question here. Only ammo Wallyworld sells around here is for shotguns.
