Walther guns

great responses guys, i just picked up a pp in .32, had to polish the feed ramp for jhps, but it is now my carry

I can't stand James Bond, but I did buy a walther P22....but only because it was "cute".

I got a model 29 S&W primarily because of Dirty Harry though, and if I can ever find one locally when I have some money, I'd like to get a SPAS-12 because of Terminator 2.

Love the Walther PP Line of Pistols

Not because of fiction or James Bond - When I was about 21 an older friend of mine whom I greatly respected recommended a PPK/s in .380 as one of the great all time carry pistols. I came across a new one at a gun shop about a year later and bought it. Loved the gun. Over the last 30+ years I have owned 4 different Walthers:

PPK/s German Walther .380
PP Manurhin Walther .380
PP Manurhin Walther .32
PP Manurhin Walther .32

I currently carry a PP Manurhin Walther in .32. I know the calibre issue has been beat to death on THR, but for me, I like the .32 best. The gun carries and conceals easy. The .32 is very accurate, and 100% flawless in function with all types of ammo. The recoil is very mild out of this gun in that calibre, and follow up shots are easily placed. To top it off, nine shots out of a small package is very impressive.

Would it be my choice if I was heading to the woods or if I felt the need for something bigger - no. Fact is, the most dangerous place I plan on being today is "Cracker Barrel," not many gunfights there over the rocking chairs or "Mama's Pancake breakfast."

I picked up a vintage 1966 PPKin .380 ACP, because it is the original pocket pistol and it is accurate:

I did considered the PPK or PPK/S because I saw it in the old Connery Bond all the way through the new-not so good Bonds.

This was just an initial interest though. I wouldn't buy a gun just because I saw it in a movie...which is why I don't have a Deagle :p

I bought the Bersa version of the PPK instead and hated it and got rid of it. If I ever go back to that style again, it will be the PPK or PPK/S.

As for the P99, I made the mistake of getting a S&W version:barf:
Sold that too.

Basically, I didn't do enough research on either of those two purchases. They were both good deals at the time, but turned out to be crappy guns...so in the end, not really a good deal.

I didn't get the P99 it because of Bond though. I considered getting the Walther version later after I sold the S&W, but in the course of doing my research, I went with a SIG instead :D

Maybe I'll get both Walthers some other day when I have extra $$$ just piling up...

Colt 1903, That is one nice pistol!!! I have been looking at the European PPKs for some time. I really like my PP and just have not decided if there is enough difference to justify the purchase. Thanks for posting the pics.

It's #1 on my "gotta get it" list. It will likely be my next gun purchase -- unless some super-duper-ultrafantastic-unbelievable-can't-pass-it-up deal falls into my lap first. (fat chance.)

That's what I wrote on Dec 8. On Xmas eve, i got the unbelieveable deal - a FREE H&R Model 732 revolver (a gun-shy friend asked me to "dispose of" an old gun she's had in her dresser drawer for years and was afraid to touch). OK, so it's not the greatest gun ever made - but the price was right.

Today I picked up a PPK/S (Interarms; .380) at a gun show. WOOHOO!

I don't know for sure what its dob is, but since the test target is dated 9/16/94, and assuming they test fire shortly after manufacture, I'm taking a wild guess that it was made in 1994.

Maybe never for me. I my first Walther was a p22. It will probably be my last Walther. I hope the guy i traded it to is happier with it than i was.

does the FEG PA63 count?

very Walther like... got it for concealed carry. Changed from 9x18 to 380 polished ramp and tinkered with mag lips a bit and works great. Noticed that the mag lips can alter feed angle so if you have feed problems after polishing ramp try opening the mag lips ever so slightly starting at the front. JHP's work just fine now.
Two walthers I have shot both had issues with mag dropping out when firing... anyone else with the same issue?

I bought a p99 in 40sw with olive lower and blk slide..... its one awesome gun, I do carry it but up in canada you have to have a good reason.... mine: im in the military

Brett30030: Don't knock Walthers because of the P22. Walther makes a wonderful firearm. Walther's parent company, Umarex, is responsible for the P22. It not a true Walther in any sense.

well the PP got retired for a revolver, only b/c i am concerned about the gun staying loaded for so long. I live in the middle of nowhere and am not concerned about having to fend off the zombie hords, that is what my bushmaster and 500 rounds loaded into mags is for. I figure 6 rounds of .327 is enough for any old punk. The gun is stainless too, so I am less concerned about ruining the finish on my german gun.

I just stumbled across this thread when I did a search on PPKs as my wife expressed an interest in owning one. I've shot a couple but never owned one.

Regarding the tie to James Bond though, I did trade a well used Walther P-38 for an HKVP70Z because Bond had one is several of the books. An interesting and fun pistol but not one to take to a match. This was before Glock was cranking out high capacity magazines and the 18 rounds really sounded like a good idea.

What is the word on the quality of the Walthers currently manufactured by Smith & Wesson? Are they as good as the old ones?

Unless you're in the market for the PPK family, the current Walther pistols(P99 and PPS) are still made in Germany. As for the S&W PPK, they recently had a recall.

Ouch I had a Interarms (380) made one about 10 years ago.
Could not fire 2 rounds in a row without a jam.
Trigger pull was bad.
Not Impressed.
The Bersa feels cheap but I have shot over 500 rounds with one mis-fire.
Trigger pull is 10x better for DA.
Walther should look into the way Bersa makes the little 380 and take notes.

I think the PPk/s's are hit or miss. People will tell you that Interarms is the best or S&W is junk, or Walther Germany is the only way to go. Fact it, Walthers are neat little guns, but I have had to work every gun over to get things smooth and reliable. I just like 'em but the newer Walther's are the only guns I have seen that are g2g out of the box.

Hate to say it, but the guys who have bought a P22 and think that they are getting Walther quality are getting neither a Walther nor a quality firearm. The P22 is a Umarex gun from start to finish (Umarex being the parent company that bought Walther in the early 1990s).

The P99 is a true Walther. So is the PPS. The SP22 also is a Umarex gun. The jury is out at the moment on whether the new PK380 will be a Walther gun or a Umarex gun. On the positive side, it at least has a steel slide (unlike the pot metal/zinc construction that is used on the P22). On the negative side is the screw that connects the safety level to the slide.

p99 in a 40 S&W. Love bond movies, and loved walthers... didnt love the gun. a little tooooo snappy for recoil

I'm with you. I want one because of James Bond and I make no apologies for it. This is America and I can do whatever I want.

And just for spite, I want a HK USP Compact in 9mm because Jack Bauer has one and an 1874 Sharps because of Quigly Down Under.:neener:
