I have been considering a small .22 for fun and varmits, liked the looks fo teh P22, read a review in Am. Handgunner and searched here and other forums, and found more happy owners than not, so I took the plunge.

I found a couple hours to sneak out to the range this afternoon, and being mindful of numerous comments to the effect that Herr Walther prefers high velocity fodder, I bought a brick of American Eagle high velocity .22 LR, along with a box of CCI Velocitor HPs.. The gun handles well, even in my big paws, and I was shooting into 3+"@10 yds after a mag or two. Not bad for me & a short snort first time out.

But here's the rub - I coupd barely get through a whole magazine without several FTE/FTE's or the odd stovepipe. I had cleaned and lubed the gun (w/ MIlTec-1) beforehand. So after about 250 rnds I'm wondering if I have a bad recoil spring, crappy mags. or what?

Then I tried the Velocitors. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, all 50 rounds through a dirty gun, no problems whatsoever. So with a dazzling command of the obvious, I make a great leap in logic and figure that the AE hi-vels don't have the beans to reliably cycle der Waltherpopper. I know small .22's can be finicky eaters, so here's my question to youse other P22 owners (and in general)- What does your gun like? I'm looking for a few recommendations on hotter .22's that work well in small pistols.

Thanks for your help>;)

My P22 is VERY picky about what it likes to eat. So far the best in it have been the Winchester bulk packs from Wal-Mart. When using Remington or AE I would get a lot of FTE's and stovepipes, so pretty much what is happening with yours. On the otherhand I have a S&W 422 that'll eat anything I give it expensive or not.
