I got my hands on a PPQ M2 the other day. I went into the shop asking about the VP9, but they didn't have any in stock. He asked if I ever handled a PPQ, and ofc I had heard of them, but never handled. I figured I'd humor him and try the trigger a couple times. Man, that's the most comfortable pistol I've ever held, and the trigger is simply outstanding. Moreso even (for me) than the ultra comfortable CZ75B and HK P30.

I now foresee buying a PPQ in the near future. Two things concern me.

The guide rod seems like it could be flimsy, and I've read one report of it breaking. I've read that steel guide rods are available, but I'm thinking I would prefer just buying a couple OEM spares. Where can I find those? Or would a steel guide rod be a better idea?

Sights. Supposedly there are steel sights available that are made by Walther, but I haven't found em. What about Dawson Precision? Anyone use these? How do they hold up? Are there better options? I do prefer a solid black rear sight, and I will be carrying the PPQ, so something that isn't sharp and likely to snag is preferable.

Anything else I should know about this gun before buying?

Thanks a bunch.

Stick to the polymer guide rod. The P99/PPQ was designed use use a polymer guide rod, and reports of them breaking are extremely rare (just as such failures are rare for Glocks and other pistols using polymer guide rods). In fact, a quick search on waltherforums.com brings up reports of broken aftermarket steel rods.

That said, Walther spare parts support is notoriously bad, and recoil spring assemblies are tough to find. You may have to call them up to order a spare. However, the original should last well past 5000 rounds.

I prefer the Meprolight steel night sights, as they match the profile of the Walther sights best (the P99 and PPQ use the same sights):

However, Trijicon makes very good night sights for the P99/PPQ as well:

If its going to be a duty carry type gun, be very careful to learn that trigger. Its wonderful, but very short and very light. It will take some finesse in a high stress situation. You may also want to give a look at mag costs.

Stick with the polymer guide rod. I too thought about replacing it when I first bought my P99 but decided against it at the time. 12000 rounds later with no problems. The PPQ is virtually the P99 v 2.0. Many of the parts interchange like the sights. So if you find parts for one, likely to work on the other. I am not a fan of single action triggers like on the PPQ so I stick with the P99.

I like those sights and might get them for mine. Have you ever looked at the FO sights from Earl's?

Sweet, I'll stick with the stock guide rod then. And thanks for the links to the various sights, including the all black rear from 10-8.

I can't wait to get this one, been a while since I've been this psyched for a specific gun.
