Walther PPS in 9mm or .40

I am looking at a Walther PPS in 9mm or .40 and wondered if any one has had any experience with this gun. If you have an alternate firearm that is comparable let me know. Thanks for any info.

The PPS is a good and very underrated gun IMHO. Other guns that are similar in size and made for essentially the same purpose include: Kahr cw9/p9/k9, S&W shield, XDs, and more.

I have the 9mm. Its the single stack glock that everyone has been asking for. I heard the .40 had some issues, don't know if they've been fixed yet.

The main thing is to decide if the euro style paddle mag release is for you. I happen to like it. I have had no hiccups with various hollow points and FMJ. I can clean bowling pins fast at 15 yards. It points well and hits what I aim at. Really slim but allows a full grip. Not a pocket gun, but with good holster it dissapears under a T-shirt.

I find all the recent hype about the Shield and XDs-9 a little amusing, considering the PPS has been on the market for a few years, and is every bit as good as those pistols. It might be ever-so-slightly larger than them, but has the benefit of shooting like a MUCH larger gun.

I heard the .40 had some issues

They had some issue with the slide stop spring but as I understand it the newer guns come with a different version which prevents the spring from popping out. Here is a link with some pertinent reading. I believe it affected both the 9 and 40 platforms.

I hear a lot of people complain about the recoil of the 40 in the small package that composes the PPS. Having never shot the 40 I can't comment. My 9mm PPS, which I can can comment on, is a nice shooter and groups like a fullsize pistol.

Recently, my wife bought one and I was quite surprised by her knowledge of what she wanted. Easy to operate, as the slide racking is smooth and easy for her, Mild recoil when shooting, easy take down for cleaning, and mag release that is ideal for a CCW. I like it so much , I am getting one too.

My 9mm PPS is one of my favorite guns. I have owned the gun since shortly after its release by Walther with zero problems. The gun is very easy to conceal, reliable, and accurate. I own a number of small 9mm pistols (PM9, Solo, Nano, G26, PX4sc, XDsc) and the PPS is one of my favorites, because of its thinness and ease of concealment.

It does seem like the Walther lines are very underrated. I never hear much about the PPQm2 either , and most of the reviews I've seen on it are very positive.

Both are good concealed carry pistols. The 9mm is certainly easier on the hand, if not on the wallet. But you can't go wrong either way.

I'd suggest the PPS9... 40 cal sm handgun is gonna be snappy. I love the paddle mag release, do that's a positive, IMO.

When comparing the PPS to other slim design single stack pistols I feel that the bore axis is very high. It feels off balance to me and very top heavy. The Kahr CW9 or the shield balance and fit in the hand much better to me. However, that is simply my opinion and anyone should actually hold a handgun before they form their own.

I handled all of the most recent crop of single stack 9's and fell in love with the feel of the pps. As another poster pointed out it shoots like a much larger pistol and carries like the super thin dream that it is. And best of all

About the only think I can add to 40 v 9 in this pistol is that I noticed today that 40mags are in stock. 9mm not so much.

Carried one in 9mm as my back up gun as a patrol officer on the street. Superb -- reliable, remarkably accurate given the short sight range, pleasant to shoot. Main downside was the arm & leg they charge for magazines.

I have the PPS in 9mm and .40S&W. The bore axis is a little higher on these guns than on the XDs and the Shield, both of which I have also, but it does not affect their shootability in my experience. They, the Walthers, are both very accurate, and the .40 is much easier to shoot than the Shield 40, which I have as well as the 9mm. In short, the PPS 40 is a bit snappier than the 9mm, but for me, not that much. You can't go wrong with either.

It's a very good gun, and I've owned both. Be careful on the serial number, though, as early ones had issues that brought a change in design.

Also, don't buy one if it's in Massachusetts (or any one with an "H" trigger). Get a non-Mass "S" trigger. You can see the stamp atop the trigger connector when you take the slide off.

I have fired both the PPS 9 and 40. The 9mm is a pleasure to shoot but the .40's recoil makes for an unpleasant shooting experience.
