Looking for a new hunter... .308... I've been narrowing it down some... Here are the choices so far...

Tikka T3 Hunter

:what: The Savages :what:

Savage 11BTH (this is the one I am leaning towards)

Savage 10 PRECISION

Savage 14 American Classic (I've heard some bad things about the cartridge)

I like the Remington M700 SPS, but a lot of people are blowing bad smoke about Remington these days....

Let me hear what you have to say... Please no arguments about ammo, I'm set on .308... Thanks

I mean the M77 Hawkeye. I would only recommend the American to someone who was looking for a budget rifle.

Well iam lookin at a lefty ruger gunsite 308 scout rifle or savage hog hunter. Probably go with the one my wife dont like. Good luck brother

To me the winchesters have been upsetting. I just got rid of a heavy varmint and the receiver was drilled off. I had to run windage bases on it. I really like savages, remingtons are nice too if you get the right one. I'd stay away from the precision carbines cause they are short barrels but that's me. I don't own a 308 anymore but either rifle will suit you. In savages keep an eye on the centerfeed actions, I really don't like them due to stocks being a little harder to find and the sps watch out for j locks and the flimsy stock. If you can find one with a Houge it would be good

I'd go for the Remington 700. I keep hearing all the bad stuff too.... and yet I keep getting super accurate problem-free brand new 700's

Savage, Remington, Tikka, Ruger all make good dependable rifles for hunting and target shooting. Best bang for the $$ is probably the Savage, though Ruger is a good and rugged hunting rifle. Tikka has a good rep, but having never owned one myself, can't speak to it.

I have a couple of Rem 700s, and both came out of the box sub-MOA and got better with time. I have a friend who shoots nothing but Savage, and all three of his rifles are excellent performers.

On my daughter's Rem 700 SPS Varmint, I did replace the factory stock with an HS Precision stock...rifle now shoots .25 inch groups at 100 yards with handloaded ammo.

I am partial to Remington, but Savage would be my second choice with Ruger following closely behind both of them.

Thanks for the replies everyone. One request. I'm buying new. If you have bought a Remington AFTER the merger, please comment on the quality, assembly and shooting. I have "heard" a lot of bad things and I would like the truth from the owners.

Another vote for the T3. I have a Lite in .308 and I love it. My only suggestions would be to get a new recoil pad and possibly new rings/mount. The hard rubber stock recoil pad is pretty worthless. Not sure about the Hunter model but the Lite will whomp you even in .308. I picked up a Limbsaver and never looked back. As for the factory rings, I've heard some people have had problems with them and some haven't. I hadn't until this year and then my scope started moving in them no matter what I did. I've heard it's just the screws and if you replace them then you're fine, but I'm going to pick up a DNZ one piece mount here shortly.

Other than those two things, I couldn't recommend a Tikka more.

So I have decided to go with a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223 with the Hogue stock.

AND a Savage 11BTH in .308...

Best of both worlds. I'll use the .308 for deer and the .223 for yotes and messing around...
