Looking at a couple of used 204's.One is a
CZ 527 varmint with 24" barrel, the other is a
Remington 700 VLS (varmint laminate stock) with 26" barrel (heavy)
both are used but in nice shape.
Pro's or con's of either
thanks

I have two 204 Rugers AR-15s, one with a 24" barrel and the other with a 26" barrel. Velocity wise, I get no advantage from the longer barrel.

The CZ would be a bit easier to handle.

I enjoy 204 Ruger, been on two prairie dog hunts with them, one hunt with a bolt gun, the other with an AR.

Are you gonna be setting up and shooting bench/prone/truck bed for the most part, or walking around a bunch? 700 VLS if the former, CZ for the latter.

MachIVshooter has it right. I have shot the 700 VLS .204 and own the 700VLS in .243. My brother has one in .223. They are all very accurate and we have killed 100s of prairie dogs with them. The only adjustment we ever made was to tune the trigger. They are, however, heavy and not suitable for carrying around. I can go on to say that the 700S are well made and super reliable. I load my own ammo, but they seem to handle most ammo reliably. And I prefer the built in magazine of the 700 to the CZ removable.

I have a .204 CZ 527 Varmint with the Kevlar stock. I've never shot the Remington you're considering, but I have experience with a number of other Remingtons. I like my CZ. It's well built and finished, it's spectacularly accurate, and it has a great trigger out of the box. Its flaw is its bolt/magazine interface. Depending on the individual gun, getting the first and sometimes the second round to feed smoothly requires anything from a a little light tweaking to a lot of polishing and filing. Of course, since the gun you're looking at is used, that may not be an issue -- but it would be a good idea to check it before buying it. As to Remingtons, I wouldn't go anywhere near a new one, and I wouldn't trust any 700 ever made until I'd replaced the factory trigger. It's always good if a gun goes BANG only when you mean it to.

I have a CZ 527 in a .204 and love it. It may be the most accurate factory rifle that I own, although my Savage 17HMR is very close to it.

My only gripe is that on mine, the safety is backwards. to fire it the safety lever has to be flipped back.

I am a big Remington fan, but I would never hesitate to buy the CZ varmint rifle. QM

Allen;

I'm also in Montana. Don't have the Remington, and I don't want one either. I do have a CZ527, and will certainly consider getting more of that model. I have several other CZ's and am quite happy with them. Throughout our family there are many CZ's and no complaints.

If you turn the gun around, the safety will work the way you want it, but it might be hard on the shoulder......:rolleyes:

I have an old Remington(25 years old) that is a solid built, top notch firearm. Based on that, I bought a new stainless SPS a few years back and was amazed how far Remington has fallen. A NIB stainless rifle should not be rusty. And the action was about as smooth as a bare butt on 40 grit sandpaper. My last Remington, unless its old school Remington.

As said, the CZ is a little different for some, but a fine shooter. I have far more CZ's than Remington's, and it will always be that way.
