So I'm sitting around home today. My 16-year-old daughter (Morgan) has a guest over, and they're talking...firearms. Morgan asks me,

Dad, when can I get a pistol, at 18 or 21?

I informed her that in Michigan, at age 18, an adult can receive a transfer handgun from a parent. If they buy one, they have to be 21. Morgan smiled and asked if she could see inside of the vault. :D She was tremendously careful, assuring each handgun was not only empty, but magazine removed as well. She handled each and every one like a pro. She concluded that she wants me,

...to transfer the G26 to me when I turn 18...maybe one of the Colt 1911s too...the one with genuine ivory grips.

Next, Morgan asked me,

Dad, show Angel your baddest gun...I mean, baddest-@$$ rifle you have!

Angel's step father (may he rest in peace) was a retired LEO sniper. He passed about 6 months ago. So, I take out the 19-pound, M700 Police .308 Win, with B&C adjustable tactical stock, Ferrell 20 MOA G-Force rail, Leupold Mark 4 30mm rings, with a Nightforce 12-42X56 scope, a 4 ounce trigger, and a Harris swivel bi-pod. Angel recognized the M700 Police as,

...what my father used! How the h@ll did you get one?! You're not a cop!!! (She followed up with a grin and approval. In fact, Joe (her dad) loved that rifle.

The girls took turns trying the rifle on the bi-pod, and literally counting the needles on the pine tree about 200 yards out. :D Of course they had to turn on the illumination feature. And now, they want to travel to the family farm this Christmas break and target shoot. Of course, they each had to dry-fire it to test the trigger.

Evening sets in, and Morgan is staying over night at her friend's house. Morgan texted me tonight from her friend's house,

Dad, can you talk with Xxx about me getting a job (even just cleaning) at the indoor range?

Oh yeah! This Daddy is the king! I raised that girl the right way! And don't even get me going about how vicious of a fighter Morgan is in Chang Hun Taekwondo. Daddy ain't gonna have to worry 'bout his lil girl. :D

Brag button off. Sorry guys. But when you have a day this good, you know durn-sure, you done-did-good!

Geno :D

Hats off to you sir for a darned good job with her up-bringing. For sure something to be smiling and bragging about.

Merry Christmas
Good luck
God speed

I like the fact that your daughter and her friend show an interest in firearms and (here is the biggie) gun safety.

Good choice on her part for picking out the ivory-gripped 1911. Well, hate to say it, but the G26 isn't too bad either. THR is proud!

Good stuff. Definitely sounds like you are raising her right.

A word of warning though - keep it up and some of the young guys here may be trying to ask her out!

Outstanding story, we need more parents like you and most of the people on this site.

I thought my son would never come around. Every time I looked at him he was Mr. XBox 360 or Wii or Nintendo. Finally the game resident evil caught his eye. He started identifying guns I would carry through the house as ones he "used" on the game. About 3 months ago he asked for a BB gun and it's been off to the races. 13 years of indoctrination has finally kicked in. We have went to two gun shows together, have shot several times together, and he is even interested in how they work. He is currently trying to talk me out of my Winchester 67 which surprisingly he prefers to the semis.

Hell yes,your blessed

The lord blessed you with that child and you must have done an amazing job of raising her in these trying and P.C. time = KUDO's to you brother.

Well, done sir.

...though...ivory handled 1911? Get her a Barbie to go with the G26 and keep the 1911. ;)

My youngest daughter is 6. She already named all the "heads" on the wall as well as identified the spot on the wall where her "first Bucky" is going to hang! She can also call out each and every one of my weapons. LOVES my vintage .22lr Ruger Pistol (Like her father she has very long fingers) and already pretty sporty with it.

Keep it up Geno. They grow up fast ( TOO DAMN FAST)

robhof

You're lucky, my daughter is 30 and just now showed an interest in guns, my son however, was able to field strip an M9 by the time he was 14 and was already shooting well with the 22 and even shot my 357max effectively. He's in the USAF and currently in Afganistan. He qualified Expert so I guess my instructions took.:D:D

You need to take that discussion and post it as notice to the boys that come over....

Merry Christmas

My youngest daughter shoots IDPA, Steel, Pin and some club matches with me.

Her 21st birthday present, by her request was for a Colt 45. I got her a Colt Combat Elite. For CCW she uses a Springfield EMP. Her long arms are a double barrel 20ga Hammer gun, and an AK 47 and a Kel-Tec Su16c with a red dot.

She takes her friends shooting and teaches them weapons handling etc. She also trains and practices for several martial arts, for self defense. She stated that she realized she was tiny and needed to up the ante in case she ever got into trouble.

She is planning to start to take knife fighting instruction too. I believe using the Filipino technique, she already has her folder. It is similar to the Spyderco her older sister trained with and carries.

Both my girls started shooting at age 8. The older one now 32, is in Grad school now, started like her sister with my old Ruger MK II KMK-512.

She stands 4'11' and about 100 lbs. She is 23 now.

Don't mess with daddy's little girl.

Go figure.

:D Nicely done, none of my own but I'm working on my nephew, starting with his Christmas present this year. Stories like this give me hope for the next generation.

I hope none of mine start eyeing my collection. Then again I'm stocking up for them ahead of time! Shame on her for wanting daddy's 1911, I'd get her a nice new one, maybe a special edition to celebrate 100 years of America's finest.

Here's to the both of you.

Thanks fellas. It's greatly appreciated. There's no secret to raising a kid to like firearms. I just involved Morgan in all the important steps, from respecting (not fearing) firearms to seeing their very legitimate application. This lil' gal is 16 going on 60.

Now I have to get her into some formal handgun classes at the range. Even though she is too young for a CCW, it would be good for her to take the class (not receiving any certificate) just to cover the firearms laws and to get the trigger time.

As we drove around to sports stores today, she declared,

I definitely want the baby-Glock! (G26) Without a doubt, I want a 9mm, because it's more controllable.

I am one lucky Dad! Thanks again fellas.

Skylerbone, all my kids are like a pack of drooling wolves just waiting to separate me from the weapons safes! :scrutiny:

Have to admit I love that they are all interested in firearms and hunting.

I hope my own father's collection is decades away from my safe personally but I do covet a few of them far too much. Luckily I've no brothers to share with and a sister who no longer shoots.

So Geno...what's it gonna be? Glock? Colt? Something old or something new? Something borrowed? Something blued?
