I'm going to the gun store tomorrow. I am torn between a Saiga 7.62x39 for $189 or a WASR-10 with 2 hi-cap mags for $339. I like the price on the Saiga but no hi-cap is a bummer.(I don't want to modify it.) I just want it as a fun rifle. Wadaya' think?

Unhesitatingly, I'd recommend the Saiga, for two reasons:

1. You save a bunch of money, and for a "plinking" gun, you don't need the hi-caps.

2. The build quality of the Saiga is light-years ahead of the cheap AK knock-offs.

Also, if you want to spend $339, buy the Saiga, and get a drop-in trigger group, new furniture (I recommend K-VAR) including a pistol grip, and modify the Saiga to a full-blown AK-47 configuration. You can do it for under $339, including the cost of the rifle itself, and you will have a very much superior rifle in terms of both initial build quality and in terms of parts quality (stock, trigger, etc.). You can also order the stock a bit longer than the standard AK stock, which is a better fit for most shooters.

In case you were wondering, I have both weapons, and I'm in the process of converting my Saiga now. I expect it to be a significantly higher-quality weapon than the WASR by the time it's finished.

I'd say for a fun gun, get the AK. cheap hi-caps (read: 75 rd drum mag :what: ), reliable, but a tad spendy for what you're getting.

I had the same choice to make about a year ago. After comparing them to each other I bought the Saiga and I`m still happy I did. The quality, fit and finish are lightyears ahead of the WASRs. It`s smooth, reliable and suprisingly accurate. I fully intended to convert it to pistol grip/full cap mags when I bought it but I found I really like it the way it is. Marcus

Get the Saiga and convert it to high cap ... then convert it to pistol grip.

The Saiga is built in the same plant the Russian military AK47s are built and having compared both rifles side by side the Saiga is much better built.

Keep in mind that the WASR left the factory as a single stack gun and had to be converted to accept full capacity magazines ... there are many out there that have been hacked up but good.

If you convert a Saiga on your own then you know it'll be done right.

(plus I think the WASR is a little overpriced ... I thought they where running around $250 ... maybe they've gone up?)
