I have a possible trade with a person and was wondering about the Weatherby .30-06. He said it is in a pacific research stock.

Does anyone know about the gun and stock? They any good? Etc... Any help would be appreciated.

Well, a .30-06 Weatherby is probably a Vanguard which is a shiny Howa which is a good quality rifle. It might be a Mk V, but there are a lot more Vanguards around.

I know there is a Pacific Research brand of stock but don't know anything about them.

Eddystone is the least desirable of the three 1917s but if in original GI configuration is still a worthwhile military collectable. Several hundred bucks worth.

If sporterized, it is worth a LOT less.

More info about the rifle is needed to say much. Weatherby has made many different versions of both the Vanguard and MK-V in 30-06. The rifle alone could be worth $300 to over $1000 depending on the variant.

I have no personal experience with Pacific Research stocks, but they are one of the top tier stocks. A McMillan or Brown Precision will sell new for $500-$650 depending on options. They are in the same price range, although I'd be inclined to pay less for one used. McMillans hold their value and are easy to sell used. Not so much for most other high end synthetic stocks.

Does this look like its still in GI configuration? It does have the flip-up yardage near the rear sight as well. I'm looking at trading some AR parts for it. Just trying to figure if I'm getting a decent deal.

Not in GI configuration, the stock has been cut down, the handguard and barrel bands discarded. The good news is that it retains the service sights, so if you could find a new stock and metal, it could be re-miled. But you would have to get into the gun very cheaply and find a stock cheap. I would not fool with it, unless it were for only a few AR parts.

Back to the Weatherby question. Pacific Research stocks were some of the best available but were very expensive, on the order of $400 ten years ago. Borden Custom Rifles bought the rights from Pacific but I think they have discontinued it too. As another reply said, the rifle could be either a Vanguard or Mk V. I would put money on Mk V since it is wearing a top tier stock. The non-magnum Mk V actions had 6 locking lugs rather than 9 and are not common but there doesn't seem to be any collectors interest. Still a big heavy action for 30-06.

The Eddystone hasn't been messed with, except for shortening the stock and discarding the handguards. In original configuration, guns like this go for around $600 in my neck of the woods. Someone who has a stash of stocks and hardware would probably pay between $200 and $300 for a gun in this condition. (This is the sort of thing I look for at all the gun shows that I attend.)
