I need some help please. I bought a Vanguard in 1978 and just took it out of the box to shoot it. When I put the safety on, the bolt is locked closed but the trigger can still be pulled. What adjustment do I need to make so the safety also locks the Trigger? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Vanguard/Howa triggers are not the greatest. If adjusted for zero creep, the safety will not engage. I will have to research a little and get back to you on the problem you describe. A Timney would solve the problem for sure!

Took a look at a Vanguard trigger. The safety a plunger that is operated by the safety lever via two different sizes holes in the body of the lever. The larger hole lets the plunger come further out and clear the trigger. Like I said, not the best trigger out there. The following is only a theory, if the safety lever is to held in position on the side of the housing, it could move without pushing the plunger in to to block the trigger. There are three small e-rings that hold the top and bottom of the safety lever in position. If any of them are missing, the safety could be out of position causing the problem.

When a Howard/Vanguard/S&W1500 safety doesn't work, it's almost always due to somebody setting the trigger for minimal creep and causing the safety to no longer function in the process.

Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention that this is a Canjar set trigger that Weatherby installed on some of their rifles. Would the problem still be caused from adjusting trigger for creep? If so, which screw to you adjust? Thanks for the help.

There was a recall on the bolt for several earlier years. I sent my SW 1500 bolt in. If memory serves me right, the safety was part of the problem, also. Maybe some experts here can chime in.
