I pickedup a NIB Savage 311H 12ga. SxS today. I could not pass up it's resplendant case colors and no plastic on the gun except the butt plate for $285 even tho i really don't "need" it .I have been using these last 20 years a 1973 Browning BSS 12ga SxS for doves with imp and Mod barrels and 2 3/4" chambers very happily thank you. Lately the insanity in this area of Ca. has mandated steel upland shot for some assinine lie the huggers came up with :cuss:
I found this 311H and it had a hang tag stateing it had 3" chambers and Mod and Mod chokes in it's long 28" barrels. I never heard of this chambering so I took a $300 chance and measured it with my choke guage at a loose modified in each barrel. Do you think Savage in the 311H's waning years discovered a Full choke in the long 28" barrel option wouldn't pass Steel shot safely? Maybe they reamed it out some in deference to folks using those 3" chambers and steel goose drops for waterfowling?
Anyway the stock is dog duty ugly hardwood with squeezed in "checkering" but I am gonna take it spring turkey hunting next month if it patterns T steel 3" and I might try some #6 2 3/4" steel in it for those doves (which are mountain pass shooting here) this fall. BTW I slipped on an Acton leather pad and at 14 3/8" LOP with those long barrels it swings pretty fair for me.;)
Anybody heard of Mod and Mod chambering in a 12ga 311H ?

Typically not. The left barrel should be tighter than the right. It is very possible that someone opened the left barrel up some.
M/F is standard for 28" barrels and IC/M for 26".

My understanding is that the more open the choke the less damaging steel shot is to older barrels. Maybe someone deliberately opened up the left choke so they could use steel shot without hurting the barrel too much.

Thr weird thing is the gun appears brand new and magnified and lighted barrel examination does NOT show any polishing ect. This was one of th last 311H s according to my # research.

"Anybody heard of Mod and Mod chambering in a 12ga 311H "

Not me and it's not listed in the '67 Shooter's Bible. My first reaction to your question was "It says WHAT?" :)
