Well balanced MSNBC concealed carry article.

LOOK! Up in the sky! Flying pigs!

I'm amazed and delighted to read a well-researched, well-balanced article on concealed carry by a main-stream, liberal media outlet.

For the most part, the quotes from the opposition sound silly and completely unfounded (e.g., “The idea that you send people out into public and if someone else has a gun, you have to kill them, that becomes anarchy.”).

The sub-title of the article: "Firearms deaths fall as millions obtain permits to carry concealed guns" - is reinforced throughout the article and can not be disputed by the opposition - even if causation can not be established.

The "anarchy" and "blood-in-the-streets" gang are left high and dry by not just a complete lack of credible evidence - but a wealth of evidence that contradicts such claims.

Yes, Well written and balanced. (Surprisingly from MSNBC)

There's an on-line survey at the end. Take it! (It shows a 70% favorable view of CCW)

...and yet they dredge it up again and again. I'd hope that antis look at the map, realize that the state they live in has CC, and then get the epiphany that Deadwood didn't spring up on Main St. That may be placing too much hope in logic, though.

i was reading through some of the comments from the above poll linked at the end of the article (AFTER you vote, you can filter it based on their choice -- choose the 'in danger' one), and it blows my mind... most of those folks clearly didn't read a word of the article, just repeating same baseless, tired nonsense. and that's not even to mention the stereotyping and casual flinging of insults...

I like the way the article starts with the case of an armed citizen defending himself (and others). A question raised by the article that's worth thinking about is why, exactly, we don't have statistics to examine trends in ownership, CCW, and crime.

Good article. I personally don't think there IS a correlation between CCW numbers and crime rates.

High crime areas tend to crack down on gun ownership and pass stricter laws (i.e. DC)
Areas with low violent crime tend to have more lax laws. (i.e. Utah)

People who want to commit crimes are generally going to commit them with whatever tools they have available, and in the case of guns I bet there is a BIG correlation between gun crime and illegally-obtained weapons. Concealed handguns in the hands of legally carrying and legal owners is really an outlier in the equation.

The real benefit of CCW is exactly that lawyer's story. He is an outlier. Most of the public doesn't live in violent-crime ridden areas. I think its fair to say most of the CCWs on this forum don't, right? But when the spillage occurs, as it did to the man in SC when a desperate criminal from New Jersey just happened to pick him, you have the option to protect yourself.

Most of my days I don't need the luxury of free speech. I don't really have anything that controversial to say (or an audience to hear.) But knowing I have that right every day is immeasurably important.

I agree with blutarsky, you all should go read the comments left by people who voted "in danger" on the opinion poll (which at the time of my posting is running 75.3% safe, 20.7%
"in danger and 4% "not sure"), the responses from the antis are very emotional and un reasoned.

Those "in danger" people are just projecting their emotions about what they think they would do if they carried a gun

Interesting that the 'safe' crowd posts are calm and rational while the 'danger' crowd posts make them sound like lunatics.

Good article though.

I just read the article and a few other related ones, too. They weren't the best in my opinion, but they did maintain some objectivity which makes for a good read. I also watched the "Handguns 101" video- it seemed pretty informative for those who just don't know much about the subject. I just wonder how many THR members will accuse the former cop of being a wanna-be gangster for shooting "gangster-style" :scrutiny:

Maybe another good poll would be:

If you live in a state that allows the concealed carry of firearms by individual citizens who hold permits, have you ever:

Seen anyone carrying a firearm? (i.e., spotted someone "printing")

Been threatened by a person with a gun, who first bothered to get a permit before threatening you with the aforementioned firearm?

Witnessed, or even heard of, a violent or gun-related crime being comitted by a person with a CWL (CHL/CWP/LTCF...)?

Heard of an instance where licensed private citizens carrying firearms made it harder for the police to do their job?

Did you even know your state allowed Concealed Carry? (If not, then you might want to re-evaluate exactly how it's going to "cause problems.")

^^ You just violated the 5 second rule.

Most shepole wouldn't be able to concentrate long enough to read the above questions, much less give salient answers.

Wow!!! MSNBC?

Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are not going to like this at all.

But ... considering there are more people watching Wow, Wow Wubzy on Nick Jr. or the Cartoon Network at any give time than both of them together on their best day, who cares.

Always happy to see a balanced report, no matter how surprising the source.

A halfwhat decent article. Very good considering it was MSNBC though.

Gun-control activists have failed in efforts to re-enact the nationwide ban on certain semiautomatic rifles they call “assault weapons.” So here's a nice dig on the Left and their use of changing language to suit their needs and induce fear. :p

and then there's this:
Corley, 61, unemotionally, in the gravelly voice of a three-pack-a-day smoker.
Trying to mix in the gun owner with the terrible people who support the big bad tobacco companies :/ So its a give-and-take article. Overall a nice change from MSNBC's usual though.
