Thanks to my other thread asking about calibers and recoil, I finally *bought* my first gun (the rest were hand-me-downs).

At the range this morning I shot a box of .38 specials through a .357, and it really didn't feel too bad. The targets were hit without too much difficulty. I really couldn't have asked for a better morning to be spending time with friends at the range, especially since one of us had never shot anything before.

Afterwards I headed over to rent a 1911 .45 ACP because I kind of have a thing for 1911s for some reason. Pretty much fell in love with how that felt firing down the range. Went through a box of ammo in no time and left a softball size hole in the target at ~10 yds. I was really surprised at how well I was able to control the kick.

So I walked out with a new Taurus PT1911AL for $450. Too bad I won't be able to hit the range again for a couple of weeks :(

Thanks!

It was a monthly special they were running. It was just a hare more than I wanted to spend, but it was new and my wife said go for it.

Lucky you! Good move. A steel-frame .45 soaks up a lot of recoil. A polymer 9mm is as much as I can handle. An aluminum .38 spl pounds my hands.

Yep, they are a long running classic for a very good reason. They work well and fit the majority of shooters so well that they are an easy gun to shoot well.

Now pony up a little more money and dress up the new toy with a holster and a few mags and mag pouches and go play at IDPA or IPSC or some other local club level events and enjoy it all the more. Punching holes in paper at the range gets old really fast but shooting in these sort of matches puts a real grin on your face and overall makes you both a better shooter and a safer one.

You should get a .22 conversion for it.

That is what I did.

I shoot better because I learned better trigger control without worrying about the cost of ammo.

Congratulations on your first purchase. What a great deal on that PT1911. I have had mine for a couple of years and cannot seem to trade it in for a more expensive 1911. It shoots so well and true.

There is a good reason why 1911's are still so popular 100 years later!

Time to start handloading though! If your local ranges will let you collect brass, you should be able to leave with more brass than you shoot each time and at that point, 45ACP drops to about $8.50 a box :D
