Equal time.
All you pump gun folks going on about what condition you keep your shotgun in and debates on "racking" is good or bad.

Semi Auto folks going on about the same thing, and the sound of a bolt being closed home or being racked back has the same debates on "racking" as well.

I gotta Single shot shotgun, so do others, and others use SxS or O/U .
What about us?

See it is always fun until someone gets hurt.
Now some of us have had our feelings hurt *sniff* *sniff* and we want equal time.

*stirs up*

You must keep it loaded, hammer back (if it has an exposed hammer), and the safety off if so equipped. The slightest sound will give away your position to the highly trained intruder who will out-flank and destroy you.:uhoh:

Oh.....and if you see only one BG ,you must quietly take him out with a knife. If you fire you will give away your position, and the rest of his ninja/tactical BG Force will open fire on you from concealment. :what:

:) ;)

My double barrel has replaced my Mossy 590 with night sights. At the bed side. Right next to the XCR fully set up. One of the two Kimber Warrior's with the X200B light attached in the drawer of the nightstand, and under my pillow in the 'house' holster, is my HD FN HighPower. Oh, there are two tactical flashlights on that nightstand a SureFire E2D and a StreamLight Skorpian. IF all that don't get 'er done, I am toast.

Oh, yea, I will have to haul back on both dog ears before I "let loose hell...." Heh Heh heh.

Absolutely no stress on anything in the weapon while waiting for the call to duty.

Go figure.

Fred

Keep a Colt SA Army .45 in your holster. When the time to scare the bad guy comes pull the hammer back. It's distinctive clicks will make the bad guy pee his pants and run away.

badguy #1 to badguy #2 "gun ? what gun I am more worried about the Bigfoot wearing boxer shorts":D:D:what:

I have 2 Mossberg/Maverick pump guns, couple of 1911's, and other assorted "Artillery".

But I gotta get one of those shorty {with the 20" or so barrels} coach guns with the big 'dog-ear' hammers....just 'cause I think they are neat....and can be pressed into Serious Service if required. Those nostalgic but still quite useful guns sometimes bring a tear to this old coot's eyes.

now passing the box-o-Kleenex over to Steve..

Long as you have your Surefire duct-taped 'tween the two barrels, you should be a'right. Shik-Shack noises notwithstanding.

My grandpa had a side-by-side 16 Ga, and 1 box of mixed shells. The about 10 rounds of buckshot were for hunting and home defense. The only one time I saw him go for his firearm was the ole 16 Ga that he kept behind the bedroom door.

Think about it. Two lightning-fast rounds of buckshot. I would not mess around with that farm house door. On the other end, I'd sure feel secure with such a shotgun if that's all I had.

I've had a Rossi 12ga external hammer stagecoach gun with 18" barrels by my bed for thirty three years. Its loaded with #4, has a stock pouch with eight more rounds. Its simple, reliable, deadly, and I can shoot it without having to find my bifocals. Wife bought it for me at Service Merchandise in 1975. Main positive for it is that my wife trusts it, she's killed a dozen or so snakes and a feral cat. Damn thing snarled at one of my kids, she shot through the screen door and blew it off the porch. I used it a dozen times in the middle of the night to wack some stupid critter. Coons in the trash, (had to replace the trash cans though), possum treed by the dogs, coyotes howling in the pasture, and twice checking strange cars in the driveway.

Steve, I've been waiting for you to post on this subject. My wife is extremely upset with both of us over a couple of past posts of yours.

Following your advice I cut the broom, mop and vacuum handles down to 14 inches. I also rigged them up with some "tactical" gadgets to help her be more efficient around the house.

Apparently the 1,000,000 candle power flashlight that I duct taped to the broom ruined the balance and she refuses to wear the battery pack that I fashioned out of an old rucksack, a car battery and a set of jumper cables.

The laser sighting system I attached to the mop only attracts the cats attention and it dances around her freshly cleaned floors trying to catch the red dot.

The short handle on the vacuum does help in reaching under the furniture though, a fact i became aware of since I "inherited" the home cleaning duties.

None of the above compare to the irritation she displayed over my cutting all of the kitchen matches in half. I guess I should have kept the ends with the red stuff on the ends.

She is also very disturbed that I bought the kids some cigarettes and started teaching them about "tactical loitering" using the smokes to blend in with the "coarser" elements down at the school yard. The good thing is they both got a two week headstart on spring break, the bad thing is we have all been suspended from THR and the gun safe. (don't tell her I snuck on here will ya).

One positive aspect of this whole ordeal is that I found about a superior home defense weapon, the cast iron frying pan. Now if I hear a "bump in the night" I just tell Mrs. Wheeler that someone is trying to sneak the kids some cigarettes. It took two weeks for the knot on my head to go down.

Thanks again for all of the good advice.

I like that one. :D

Well, if your break barrels aren't black with stuff hanging all over them they won't work anyway so the sound or lack therof doesn't even come into play.
Ever see the movie, Tremors, lots of Burt Gummers out there.;)

Figured if I camo spray paint the Superpose, tape a flashlight to the lower barrel, I'll be halfway to having the tactical over/under JMB intended us to have (had he lived)....still working on the other half of this project, the folding stock.

I want to tape a picante rail to my coach gun so I can have chips and dips ready for the cops when they finally show up. Might look cool with that Surefire light on it, too.

:D

I keep my 20 gauge coach gun cocked and locked, loaded with safety on, leaning against an off side wall where if it were to fall, it'd be away from the room. There's a sewing machine cabinet it leans into. An', yeah, when they hear the click of that safety coming off, the chills will run up their spine, no doubt....

Goodness Gwacious! Where to start replies!

Rembrandt,
Gets a reply as he posted a very nice picture as he always does of a really fine shotgun. Very Nice Sir!!

I'd opt for spray on bedliner if I were you, covers up that "uneven" and shiny finish. I'd do burlap bag brown and the jury will understand how "that old barn gun is not as hot to pick up when it has been sitting in the bed of a farm truck on a hot sunny day being brown and not black, and scratches show up less on burlap brown than black"

*wink*

H&R Topper, Youth 20 ga, fixed mod choke with factory recoil pad.
Load is slugs for my preference others use #3 buckshot.

A number of ways are used by me and mine that have these guns handy in the home or office.

1. Gun open, hammer down, shell in chamber.
One smooth move of closing and hammer back and fire.

2. Gun open , hammer down, no shell in chamber, either a shell is near gun or pull on from elastic butt shell holder.

3. Gun closed, hammer down , shell in chamber. To employ, hammer back and fire.

-
Misc.

-Elastic butt shell holders are a combination of not secured or being secured by electrical tape.

-Leather shell holder like Cowboy action shooters use, some have options of not only being belt slides, also "paddle" - meaning the "paddle" fits inside waistband, and shells are on outside of belt, pants with out belts for instance.

-These guns are only 36" total length, the same as a yard-stick. Bone stock, just a "youth" or "kids" shotgun.
The throw to open and close is short. I and mine practice getting fired, empty, and new shell in from weak hand fast and getting off repeat shots.

Sound: many say this sounds like a door being shut and the door bolt going into the bolt facing in a door jam when closing or opening. Hammer being cocked is muffled by the breaking of gun being opened or closed, it happens really fast with us, that mess with these.

It is not a sound many are familiar with, even amongst firearm owners and shooters.

I am 6' and I can stand there with this gun and the muzzle not touch the ground, I can have this shotgun in hand and folks not know I have it in hand.
Just hidden by my leg, or off to the side near a doorway, even sitting in a recliner, or end of sofa and hand over and off to the side.

I hit that lever on a recliner to let the foot rest down, that sound is muffled of hammer coming back.

In practice - my best time was .05 seconds from sitting and first shot fired.
Recliner, feet up, the threat entered past a door opened for a "pizza delivery" and one handed I put a slug COM.

If memory serves it was about that same time or maybe .07 seconds I got the shot off and into COM from sitting up in bed, against pillows, in a lesson deal.
BG came in , entered bedroom where I was a "recovering from hip surgery" and one handed, using bed for support the shot was 3 feet and I sent that slug with BG holding a gun at me.

Slug went through the bed linens, from which is was under. I looked like I put that hand down to steady my surprised self after dropping a book I was reading.

I and mine do the same things with handguns, and rifles too.
One reason we pay attention to action types and pay attention to home defense choices.

Sitting, reclined (recliner or bed) laying down (sofa,or bed) for examples of shooting positions we shoot from - often.

No jokes from me this round. Loaded, closed, safety on. Two rounds of #4 faster than most folks can blink. There will be blood, oh yes, there will be blood.

A lot pump and auto shotgun shooters don't relize how fast some one practiced with a single or double can reload I remember reading a waterfowl article in a hunting mag (long ago) talking about the fact that a pump or auto will get off the 1st 3 rounds a little faster but a double will be faster for the 4th through 6th rounds:neener: I had a friend once tell me that I could not have been the one shooting because no one can fire a single shot that fast

Sometimes I just have to pitch in my two pennies. I will say three truths:

1. No BG who has already entered your home is going to be deterred by a "ker chunk" sound. Some of them will on the street when the gun is visible and held by a mean looking cop, and the BG wasn't an idiot. A BG who enters your home when someone is likely to be there is an idiot, doped up, bent on killing or raping someone, or other "unreasonable" intent. Home Invasion is a crime committed by criminally unskilled idiots.

2. A SXS with ejectors can fire 50 rounds (or 25 for that matter) faster than any other shotgun. Just remember while the pump/auto guy is stuffing rounds up a tube, the SXS guy is firing 2 rounds per second, maybe a second and half if he hasn't trained this way. Just watch the cowboy action shooters and they can't even have ejectors!

3. Birdshot(no matter what size) is for the birds. Please just trust me on this. If you use birdshot you will probably leave the BG with a large bad looking shallow wound, which probably will not stop him forthwith, but eventually will from blood loss. He will probably survive to sue you for something other. Use buck or ball, might save your butt, both during the event and afterwards.
