On tonight's "Gun Talk" program, the founder of Black Hills ammunition talked about reloading and mentioned highly of Hodgdon rifle powders and Sierra Match King projectiles.

I have gotten smallest shot groups with Black Hills "blue" reloaded .223 ammunition over other various factory ammunition.

Any guess as to their reloading secrets? Is it as simple as powder and SMK projectiles?

Me personally, I'm not a fan of SMK's consistency in their bullets. I would think it'd have to be in their brass, and maybe their powder drop consistency.

In every AR I have owned the Black Hills .223, either remanufactured or new, loaded with 52 Grain Sierra Matchkings was the most accurate load at 100 yards regardless of barrel length or rifling twist. With 25 years of handloading experience I have been able to equal, but never beat, the accuracy of that load.

They make really good ammunition.

Just my .02,

I would not say there are any secrets. They just seem to use quality components. Any experienced, precision minded handloader can do the same thing or better.

Their secret, if they have one?

Is much tighter QC then the other companies.

Plus, the owner is a shooter instead of a desk jockey CEO.

Simple as that.

Best rifle group I ever shot was at 100 yards with a TC Encore in .223 and Black Hills remanufactured 52gr MHP ammo. Two rounds touching and the other about 3/8" away from the first two.

If they told you it wouldn't be a secret any more! LOL

I don't think it's a secret at all. I have shot .314" groups with a 55gr SGK bullet #1390 over Varget powder. The groups are repeatable too and that seems to be the best combination in my Howa 1500 rifle.

Not a secret, good components and careful construction of the ammo and you will be successful.
