What are some good "Sleeper" Semiautos?

Walther P1's are great guns, and can be had rather cheaply right now.
EAA Witness pistols are super.
Rock Island Armory 1911s are probably the best bang-for-the-buck in my opinion.

More info. after a google for a review and this wikipedia entry
has plenty of links

The FN - FNP Series also marketed as the Browning Pro 9
and Browning Pro 40. Interesting in the following link FN states
or claims it is the ONLY polymer framed handgun with replaceable
rails in order to make it rebuildable. And before any of the others
on this list say how durable their flavor of polymer frame is, answer
this question, Can you weld polymer?

A nice "sleeper" which keeps the price down are the Daewoo models, either in 9mm or 40S&W...It's virtually unknown & misunderstood by most pistoleros. Most used are under $300 or n.i.b for slightly above that figure. The pic is the DH40 w/my custom alterations.

FEG PA-63, either in 9 x 18 or .380.

And, Mad, those are some really cool grip panels! What's the story behind them and are they actual skin or painted or something? Do tell...

Have found lots of great deals in used guns ately, lot of people are selling them for cash $$$.

Got a awesome Colt Commander two weeks ago for $649.00 and a S&W 4006 for $349.00 a while back (cop trade in) then found three magazines for the S&W for $5 apiece

Lots of really good deals can be found if you know where to look.

Mad Magyar, That is nice.....have anymore pics?

I like it, I like it.

psst, hey Mac tech/O.P.

THe CZ 75B has an 'indicator' there's a round in the chamber.

The extractor at it's forward edge just behind the ejection port,
Sticks out a bit when a round is chambered, vs, it's flush when the
chamber is empty.

WHat more do yah need?

Sleeper Semi...

Try a S&W Model 908. It's the "ugly" stepsister to the more fashionable 3913. They're both single stack 9mm DA/SA and the 908 is a little less finished and polished. But it's one heck of a nice shooter. Compact and relatively lightweight, too.

I'm not in love with my S&W 469 for it's ergos (grip is sort of sharp at the forward corners). It is a de-cocker model with a mandatory DA first shot. It is my truck gun however and I just added some grip tape to "fix" the ergos.

I have more than a few Airsoft guns. My absolute favorite one to hold (though the guts are busted) is an 8045 Cougar. That thing was built for my large paws with medium fingers attached. My second favorite is CZ 75. Third place is Sig 226.

I wouldn't feel slighted with ANY of those three in a "real" gun.

My Astra A80 is a pretty sweet gun too. I only have one magazine for it (wasn't smart enough to get extras back then). It hasn't been fired more than 50 rounds either.

Makarov with a "Makawrap" grip is a dang sweet unit too!

So, based on the reccomendations in this thread, the CZ 75 is a definite contender, and as far as the Glock issue goes, I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, right now I don't like the top-heavy/muzzle-heavy feel and the balance shift as the mag empties, but they *are* solid guns, just not sleepers

I think my next pistol will be a .45ACP, just because I want one, no other reason, valid enough reason though, right? ;)

Here's the thing, I've held a number of different 1911-format firearms, but I just don't like the narrow grip, it's too thin, I like a nice, meaty grip like on my Taurus PT-99AF, I guess I just don't like single-stack pistols, as I had the same complaint about the Star 9mm I tried that looked like a 1911 chassis but was 9mm

What I'd really like to find is a double-stack .45

All Poly guns feel top heavy, try a HK or XD, they are worse IMO.

I would say EAA Match or CZ would be the best bet.

I would get something totally different, like a Single Action CZ, or maybe a P-01 for carry.

You can get a pretty beefy rubber grip that wraps around the front strap for the 1911....

For double stack Para Ord or S&W might be choice.

A Norinco 54 or 213. Nice to shoot, easy to maintain, rugged, simple, thin, feels good in the hand, etc, etc, etc. The 213 is 9MM, btw, if you're leery of 7.62x25. They are very affordable. Track some on Gunbroker. I got an unused, in the box w/papers Model 54 for $223. Magnificent pistol. The 213 is like target gun accurate. Also magnificent.

A Feg PA-63 is great, too, if you replace the hammer spring with a 13 pounder from Wolff (about $10.00.) The DA trigger is now just fine. My girlfriend carries one.

CZ-40b. $289 new. after 15k rounds and getting beat, it still shot a 1" group at 50 feet yesterday evening, and had fed everything i've tossed at it. i paid $250 for LNIB on the left for my carry, and paid $275 for hte one on the right that i "customized a little" for uspsa limited-10.

The RIA 1911 Compact CS @ $369 from Centerfiresystems.com is a heck of a good buy. Mine is accurate and feeds any .45 ammo I've tried in it, from FMJ to LSWC. Another great pistol from the same distributor for about the same price in 9mm is, as others have said, the Steyr M series.

Kinda depends on what calibers you like and how much money you want to spend...

9mm- Ruger SR-9, S&W 5903, S&W mod.39, Beretta 92FS (M9)
.40 cal- S&W 4006, Springfield XDM, Beretta 96
.45 cal- I've shot several Taurus that seemed like really good guns... not sure of the model numbers.

I'm sure that somewhere in there is "something to fit your hand".
