Ask Mr Google. Most popular cartridges. This is ranking of sales.

My search was U.S. cartridges. I really thought .22 would be first. Not so. Kinda hard to dispute

Id like to see source or parametres for the data. I can see maybe military sales for the top of the list. Some that seem strange are placement of 7.62x54 as popular as 30-30 and 50 blackpowder beating 270win? And 22WMR not on the list at all meaning its less popular than 7.62 russian, 20 guage, 44 mag, and 50 blackpowder.....no way.

Popular and ubiquitous are not always the same thing.

My list:
.22 LR
.30-30
12 ga.

If a podunk gas station sells ammo, it will be at least these three.

Touche' on the semantic correction. was just trying to paint as broad a definition as possible. But, you re correct! I would opine that ubiquity mirrors sales though.

That's what I was basing my choices on. Whether I stop in a city sporting goods store or a country store, in normal times there is always .22LR and 12 gauge.

Volume of consumption is a different thing, IMO.

Gun ranges are different too, as they will have ammo that suits what you can fire there. For instance, indoor ranges rarely have shotgun ammo.

Reminds of a time I was driving through the country about a decade ago and I stopped into a general store to buy gas, etc. Lo and behold was a brick of .22LR ammo. I took the brick to the counter to buy it and the man behind the counter was very perturbed that I wanted to buy the whole brick. Seems that he was used to selling only a box of 50 at a time.

Shotgun: 12 gauge, 20 gauge, .410 gauge

Well, these last ten months I would have to say:

#1 - Birdshot, usually 12ga, but 20 can be found. NO buckshot, very little slugs.

#2 - 6.5 Creedmore. I've seen more of this rifle caliber than any other.

#3 - 22lr, mixed bag as to type.

This is not popularity, but what can most often be found locally for the last ten months.

The most commonly found for me has been 7mm-08, .270 WCF, 6.5x48, .300 Win Mag, and 7mm Rem Mag.
