I use my carry gun. Glock 36, .45ACP

In response to kokapelli's response of 8-9 .30 cal balls beats 2-3 rounds from an AR or pistol, He must be going to shoot his attacker at point blank range everytime if all are to land down range on target. In that case he need not worry about felt recoil or muzzle blast.

Testing my Remington 870 with Federal reduced recoil 00 buckshot at 25' which would be the longest hallway in my house, yes all rounds consistently hit within a tight pattern of about 5 or 6 inches. If that doesn't stop a BG nothing will.

By the way, I practice the 21' distance firing from a chest high hold with the stock tucked in between my arm and ribs which makes for fast pointing and maneuvering of the 870 in small spaces.

BERETTA 96D Vertec

I used this pistol because it has a light rail to which I have added a light and because I can shoot it slightly better than any other .40 S&W I have shot.

I sometimes use my WALTHER P-99 as my house gun as it is my concealed carry gun. It has night sights and the best grip of any gun that I have handled.

In the bedroom, we have a Glock23C on my wife's side of the bed, a Kimber Customer Classic .45ACP on my side. In the closet, there is an Olympic Arms K3b and a Mossberg 500 shotgun. In our family room, I have a Glock 36. In a drawer close to the front door, we have a Taurus 450.

I'm a big believer in having a gun near where you might need it. We practice with them all. Believe it or not, my wife LOVES the K3b. During an incident (if she was not near the other guns and chased into the bedroom) she would probably grab that first. She loves shooting it and 30 rounds of .223 would discourage most bad guys.

Twelve gauge pump... Keep the chamber empty just so I can crank a round in the chamber. The psychological effect of hearing that round chambered is a deterent in and of itself.

RIA 45 - on the shelf nearby.

Jeez, not that tired saying again...:barf:

Either my S&W 1066, SW99 .45, 645 or any of my 40's. Safety off if equipped. I just want to be able to grab it and pull the trigger.

My issued 870 duty shotgun, with issue ammo (also reduced recoil 00 buck) would pattern 3" at 7 meters and 6" at 15. At inside the house sort of ranges I had zero fear of flyers and was confident I could put all eight pellets into a head shot if need be. At 21 feet like you're talking about, a headshot with a hostage partially obscuring the target would be a reasonable shot in extremis.

I keep my Mossberg 500 short barrel 12ga. in the corner near the bed. Magazine full of #1 shot. Nightstand gun is a Ruger SR9. I like shotguns for defense, very effective and less worry about a slug passing through a wall and hitting something or someone outside.

Secondary to my 12ga double barrel hammer gun and SCAR are the following handguns.

I have a S&W 642 with CTC laser in a Bianchi Lightening 55 holster under my pillow, along side the bed on the night stand, right next to my Surefire Z2 LED CombatLight is a Kimber Warrior with a X-200B (it throws a much wider beam that I prefer inside) Surefire with the DG switch. In the draw is a Beretta Vertec with a X-200 SureFire without the DG switch attached yet and it has the Beretta Factory 20 round SWAT magazine, it gives me ready to grab options. The springs in that magazine will hold up the back of your F150 pickup truck.

My Go bag, (just referring to handgun stuff, not shotgun/rifle stuff in the same bag, which is an active shooter Maxpedition bag without the external mag pouches) 3 additional 1911 magazines, and two Beretta 92 Mec-Gar 20 round magazines, additional flashlights, batteries, small Boo Boo first aide kit too. This hangs over the hammer gun's barrels right next to the bed. It contains both shot gun ammo and a couple of magazines for the SCAR too. Any of my "ready" go to guns have back up ammo in the Go Bag (38spl for the J frame in a couple of speed loaders, a couple of magazines for the Ruger LCP too. (the Go Bag should not be confused with the Bug out bag or BOB for my guns if I must leave the house "heavy".)

If I am in my house Dressed I will most likely have my Springfield Professional on my hip, with one additional magazine. If I am in a "plastic" mood it will most likely be a S&W M&P 9mm Full size.

If I am not dressed, it could anyone of several handguns, but always in what I label one of my "house" holsters. Most often either an Old Alessi Talon plus, or a Don Hume M715 that protects the gun and wood furniture from each other. 75% of the time it is still a 1911.

The 1911, for me, is the handgun I have considerable combat experience with. Secondary to a "K" frame S&W. In a fight go with the weapons you know best, but a hand gun is ALWAYS secondary, always. NO wrong answers for which sidearm is your secondary home defense weapon though.

Good luck.

because almost all my auto's are 1911's (have 1 Glock). bought this specifically for home duty to hang a light on along with using a hand held flashlight.

For a long long time I kept a Taurus PT99 around loaded with Federal +p+ because that weapon had proved itself reliable to me with 2 different carry loads and also have put several rounds down range without issue. I have recently switched to a Glock 19 which has accomplished the same goal and also fills the role of a primary carry piece.
