is when people leave garbage behind. How haed is it to pick up your empties or whatevr crap you bright with you? I'm lucky in that i can have my own private range and only friends or family are allowed. I'm always at what folks leave behind at the public ranges. You wouldn't trash your own home or place o buiness so why trash somone elese's? And no I don't think I am just being a grumpy middle-aged guy. It really bugsme to no end.

I am blessed to have a range at home now. Shot at outdoor public ranges for years and have some horror stories. The last time I was at one a couple of guys walked to the table next to me and started shooting semi autos Gangsta style spraying hot brass off the side of my face and down the back of my shirt. There is really no way to begin an intelligent conversation with anyone that stupid.

yikes, that sounds awful. glad you can shoot at home. my understanding is that aiming sideways isn't accurate.

Public ranges are no different that much of anything else that is used by the public. People are raised like morons and grow up like morons. I'm sure their parents probably were just like them and never made them understand that that kind of attitude is piss poor and kicked their asses for acting like it.

But, it has noting to do with gun ranges in particular.

I get it. I hate having to pick up other people's garbage no matter where I am. I hate litter and I have a special case of the ass with the litterbugs. People leaving crap behind is why I stopped letting people shoot and hunt here on my land before I built the house a few years ago. I am a big believer in "be a grownup and pick up your crap". It's not that hard, any water head can do it.

It is what the professional expert genius economists call "The Tragedy of the Commons." If it belongs to "everybody" then everybody assumes "somebody else" will take care of it.

I am amazed at the number of posters who have suitable private premises for shooting.
I live in town and am a "member" of four different ranges. Only two are real membership clubs where I have a voice and a vote, the other two are commercial operations where "membership" is really just prepaid access.

I don't really have a range. I can't put up anything permanent because I shoot in a hayfield right across the road from the house that doesn't belong to me but I can go out to about 400 yards. I can't shoot in the backyard because there's cows on three sides. That kinda sucks but it is what it is.

Concur, just too many mouth-breathing oxygen thieves out there.
"We" have a slight advantage in that most of them are now too addicted to their devices to even irl anything as 'real' as a gun range.

Agreed it is not just gun ranges that suffer these heathens. I also fish and Kayak on public waters and see the same miserable attitude. Discarded junk, half eaten food or drink containers, the streams and rivers are full of crap that belong in scrap yards. At our public range which I am now working and starting my 4th year I can watch people standing at the garbage containers, two side-by side with one clearly labeled as Paper and Cardboard Only, and watch them toss their water bottles and spent brass into it. Even though also next to those two barrel is a bucket clearly marked BRASS, and at the end of each bench is a pail also marked BRASS.

I agree 100%, the people.

If they are not open to just anyone, rules tend to be followed a little better. Can say that about a lot of things.

Seriously? That's all you've got?

What bugs me about public ranges is grandfathers walking their grade school aged grandson down range in front of me to put up a target, but it's a hot range and we're still shooting. What bugs me about public ranges is an employee chastising me about safety glasses one minute before he calls the range hot...with four people still down range changing targets. What bugs me about public ranges is people stealing your pistol off the bench while you're down range changing your target. What bugs me about public ranges is people sweeping the line repeatedly while the RSO is in the office staying warm and drinking coffee. What bugs me about public ranges is being cussed out and told to f-off after asking someone to refrain from handling firearms while I'm down range. What bugs me about public ranges is being told that, if I ask someone to refrain from handling firearms while I'm down range ever again, I'll be trespassed from the property. (That's the employee's job, not mine.) What bugs me about public ranges is a State Police officer showing off his issued rifle...while I'm down range.

If the only problem your public range has is a litterbug, count yourself lucky.

Again as a RO at a PUBLIC RANGE, if that's what bugs you then try going to a PUBLIC RANGE that is unattended by a RO and all the John Wick, Rambo, Urban Cowboys are roaming freely.. I personally know of a few of those.

I can tell you don't know the new kids out there. You saying that "You wouldn't trash your own home or place of business" but yes they do. We have a rental house next to us & we have had some young tenants just toss their trash out the back door. Most don't pay but a month or two of rent, then squat & wait until the courts toss them out. The new John Q Public is nothing more than trash.
At our club range I have seen one group come in with a new shotgun & start trying all the shotgun rounds they can to get something to fire, they didn't even know what gauge it was. When I walked over to them they had a 20ga down the barrel & a 12ga in the chamber behind it on a 12ga gun. They are lucky they couldn't get the action to close or they would have blown the gun up.
We now make everyone take a safety course before they can get their gate card.

Sounds to me like you need to find a better public range. Yours sounds like a disaster !

My experience is different. In the 1980’s I was a member of the Jefferson County Gun Club (Pine Bluff)
We had rules and everyone followed them.
We were able to get out to the country and I was able to set up a 1/4 mile range on my own land. I count myself lucky but I miss shooting at the club and hanging out with the old guys talking reloading and such.
I have no illusions. I’m sure the club ain’t the same and I would be disappointed now.
The dynamic that applies today; the larger the given group the lower the aggregate IQ.

Mine too.
Of course my range isn't really public.
It's outdoor but has membership dues and a locked gate.
There is occasionally trash around, but it's not very common. Our range even gripes at people for leaving targets stapled to the target boards. lol
Mine is Benton Gun Club, less than an hour from Pine Bluff.

Oh I haven't been there in there years. I'm a member at a private, members-only range. With a few exceptions, we don't have those problem. (The few exceptions being the active duty Army infantry guys on some weekends.)

We have one of those, and I don't go there. Ever. But yeah, I've heard horror stories. (Like, guys being drunk or high-mj is legal in my state and very easy to acquire) while shooting. No thanks.)
