Reloading for my 9 and 45, for plinking purposes as of right now.
What bullets should I be buying and where to buy them from
I just got into reloading, for my first run of things I went over to Cabelas and picked up what they had - mainly Berrys bullets.
I am guessing there are better deals out there, what is the best bang for the buck?
For low cost plinking bullets, it's hard to beat plated bullets.
But not all plated bullets are same as they vary in plating thickness, lead/alloy core hardness, sizing and bullet nose shape/ogive. Typically, "regular plated" bullets average .004" thickness copper plating while "thick plated" bullets have .010" and thicker copper plating.
In my experience, if I pushed regular plated bullets past mid-range jacketed load data, accuracy started to fall but with thick plated bullets, I could use jacketed load data and maintain accuracy. Another issue with plated bullets is softness or hardness of lead/alloy core. If too much taper crimp is used, the softer core will squish and brass spring back will decrease neck tension and cause bullet setback when the bullet nose slams on the feed ramp. RMR's Hardcore Match plated bullets have 11-12 BHN lead alloy core which helps to maintain greater neck tension over plated bullets with softer cores, especially for 115 gr bullet with shorter bullet base sized larger at .356".
I am using RMR HM plated bullets as my designated carbine load bullets to lower reloading cost over jacketed bullets while maintaining acceptable level of accuracy on this thread -
