What caliber for robot?

Spyvie: We don't live in that world. There are already small tracked “robots” with mounted weapons, I don't think any of them are autonomous yet but this would seem an obvious eventuality.

Indeed we don't live in THAT world! Given the track we're currently taking I should think that a CYBERDINE corporation is not far off leaving us at the mercy of the Terminator (Governator?)! For that I think I'll have need for something in the 40-watt range.

Well ... unless it gets some significant armor added at some point, most any round with decent penetration & energy (say .30 cal & up) would probably do the job at this point.

I seriously doubt that there is much in the way of redundancy in any of the hydraulic/pneumatic systems or in the controlling electronics, all of which would represent potentially disabling targets. It sounds like there is an internal combustion motor providing power, so that is another potential target (almost certainly an aluminium block).

A few rounds of 00 buck in the "guts" would likely be more than enough to do sufficient damage to ground it.

No Fate.

I'd cycle 12 slugs and 000 buck. Impulse-momentum transfer and disrupt any exposed circuitry. chances are that when it's deployed to the field it'll be armor plated..

having thought about it a bit more. I can't think of a reason not to go with just slugs... I'm thinking the greatest need would be to take it off it's feet.. that means getting the greatest mass of round on it and keep them coming..

For the robot tanks I used in Extreme Arsenal, Able Team had .50 Beowulf conversions for the M-16's, loaded with tungsten core ammunition.

Phoenix Force made do with McMillan and Barret .50 caliber sniper rifles for the assault on the production facility in Mexico.

I love the cover artist for giving the Ankylosaurs AT-AT heads.

kludge - we won't use horses because our enemies are invariably despicable human beings who won't mind murdering a beautiful, loyal and intelligent animal to hamper our soldiers.

Plus, artillery fire and SAWs hurt their poor ears. Robo-mules don't worry about their hearing.

If you want a pack horse, why not get a horse? That said, I think I would go for the hip.

Well, for the sake of argument...
  • Horses need rest on a regular basis
  • Horses don't always behave predictably
  • Horses need to eat more than just gasoline (though they can sometime forage pretty well)
  • It's hard to stock spare parts for horses
  • Horse exhaust doesn't just dissipate in the wind
  • It's hard to build a lot of horses in a hurry

Asking what kind of caliber for the object of whatever stupid news blurb you found just so you can post it here is dumb. Stop it.

Merely mentioning a firearm in regard to any random subject doesn't magically make it on topic.
