Matt - I think this is the one. The 'Shall not be infringed' is the message I think we need to get across.
Good points on the RKBA text...but...I think it actually needs to be slightly cryptic - that's what gets people to ask questions about it.
Hell, half the people out there aren't going to know what the 2nd Amendment is for that matter, or what 'We the people' refers to.
Matt - I'm going to pass your pic on to my brother who's a photoshop whiz and see if he has any ideas on tweaking your design...but I really like the one you came up with!!
The problem with spelling out all the words is that you only have so much space to work with. Here is a template showing how many letters would be available assuming this font size. Just so you all know, I've taught myself more about photo editing in the past two days than in the past 24 years!
Mattz357 - I agree about the order-shipping logistics, a nightmare. Why not pass the whole thing to the manufacturer; to 1) come up with with couple of designs for your approval and 2) have them take care of order-taking and shipping at a reasonable cost/price.
I also agree on the amount of writing which can be put in the ribbon. How about keep the "RKBA" in center (top); one the hidden-fold shorten and abbreviate: "2ND --- AMNDMT" and on the outside fold "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED".... play with it to see if it works.
Oldfella, I can't say this for sure, but I VERY seriously doubt the manufacturer would ship these to multiple addresses. They have free shipping, and that would almost certainly be to one address for the whole lot. I did get pricing for bubble mailers today though. The magnets are roughly 4"x8" AFAIK, and Sam's has 6x9 bubble mailers for about 20 cents each. That should put shipping right around $2. Here is what your ribbon would look like, oldfella. I don't mind custom making these, but we should probably come up with a system for voting on the final design before we have too many choices. Thanks!
That looks real nice, Mattz357 - and I do agree with BluesBear about readability; but if it is designed to be placed on vehicles, 4X8" is a good size.... maybe even 6X10". It would be more noticeable/readable if abbreviated: "2ND.....AMNDMT".
I wonder if the Post Office would "frown" on mailing magnets... knowing that their processing machines are mostly metal.
I'd be glad to assist with the mailing, if that helps.
Personally, I'd rather not see the "Shall Not Be Infringed" language. I'd much rather see just "Second Amendment Rights" (maybe with the "RKBA"). The use of "ribbons" is not to be confrontational, but to be unifying. These are not bumper stickers (with bumper sticker slogans) where you may wish to be more "in your face."
Oldfella, I don't think the size is adjustable. Also, since many cars can just barely fit the standard size on the trunk, making them any bigger wouldn't be good. The post office must not mind, thousands of these sell on ebay. I bought my wife and her family a handful of the pink ones and they came in an unpadded catalog envelope.
Henry, excellent point about being confrontational. Here are your requests.
I can't say for sure what the cost will be until I hear back from the custom department, but this is my guess... they are listed at $2.40 for 250, $1.90 for 500, $1.70 for 750 and $1.50 for 1000. It states that the price is for two colors (gray/silver), but doesn't specify if text (black) is included in that price. An extra color would add 10 cents each. I would assume that it is included, but you know what assuming does for you. Beyond that, 20 cents per order for a padded envelope and then shipping. According to the USPS website, you can mail an envelope up to 8 ounces for just under $2, and we should be safe at that weight. I will call or stop by the post office Wednesday and confirm that amount and approximate weight to be correct. If a standard $2 shipping is charged (except in exceptionally large orders), excess from bigger orders would be covered by surplus from smaller orders. Any pennies left in the piggy bank at the end are donated to the NRA or similar organization. What do you all think? Thanks!
What color? Well I'm kind of a pinkish tan... *looks around*... Nevermind....
Seriously, has anyone printed one of these off yet and slapped it to the side of their car's rear quarter(ya think scotch tape is as effective as the magnets?)? It's dead. I'm not certain what the advertising term would be but it fails utterly to catch attention(in my opinion). I've noticed that in business advertising before, too, when they do the text in silvers and grays. If I had a camera I'd take a pick and show ya. It just vanishes on white cars. It looks better on red but still...lifeless.
True everything is fuzzy from my enlarging and crappy printer but I don't think that's much of the problem. Someone else needs to make themselves a couple and do some test sticking before you all lock yourselves into the color scheme.
2nd, I planned on both shades of gray being darker, but my limited photo editing experience didn't allow me to change them. For final production a slightly darker shade of gray will be used, but keep in mind, too dark and you won't be able to see the lettering. If anyone else has an idea, please make it and post it, I won't be offended. Thanks!
Mattz - I think with the edges a darker gray, as you now have it, will show just fine... but it won't hurt to let the manufacturer show you couple of samples for your review and approval.
The ribbons I've seen appear to be rich - bright, if you will... very visible. But no matter what your final color/text combo is it must be done with proper ink/dye (whatever they use) to fight fading/discoloration.
Nothing like having it gone in three months.
That's why I don't own red cars.
This project is shaping up nicely... and thanks, all, for your efforts.
Maybe we should start the "voting." Which design do you like best, and how many you are/would be in for. This will be helpful in determining cost and overall size of the project. Thanks!
You can't split up the letters "RKBA" or it says something else (nothing). And when the other phrases are split up it fails in its QUICK reading. I think the wording below best lays out all the necessary information to convey the ideas quick and legibly.
