What do have waiting for you in the reloading room?

I have a new .38Spl load development project in the works. I bought a few 110gr jhp from RMR - a discontinued Winchester bullet designed for standard pressure loads in short barrels - and there’s zero loading data published. I have pretty good selection of the mid-range powders (except the VV N3xx series) and a good testing platform (T/C 10” .357 barrel) and something kinda like a chronograph (Chrony F) so I should be good to start doing research and projectile dissecting.
The goal is a 25yd varmint dissuader with low recoil, low flash, good penetration in flesh but a miss hitting a solid barrier will stop it easily. No ricochet! Velocity goal is 800-1000fps depending on barrel length and pie plate rapid fire, each hand, unsupported in a dark alley.

Basically, a SilverTip.
What powders do you have? I have some .38spl/110gr jhp data in my lyman #50.

I’m sticking to the Winchester powders and cases for a sort of “factory duplication” load:
.38Spl 110gr. Winchester Kinetic HE JHP, 950fps from a 4” barrel, standard pressure (<17kPSI).
I’ve tested WST, W231, W244, Autocomp, and Ramshot Silhouette (WAP + FS). I still have to test HS-6 (formerly W540) and retest AutoComp because my Chrony battery died.

So far, Silhouette and W244 are clear leaders.

One of my criteria is low flash for low-light conditions.

Hmm, not much help on my end. Of the powders you listed, only HS-6. 231 were listed. Have you thought about BE-86? I believe it has flash suppressants.

I don’t have BE-86 but I do have WST, 231, 244, AutoComp, Silhouette, HS-6, and I have been considering getting W572 but haven’t. Not yet.

Unique, True Blue and No.5 would also probably work well but those are not Winchester powder.

W244 and Silhouette both came very close to the performance and feel of W-W 110gr SilverTip factory ammo, which is what the Kinetic HE is based on. 5.4gr of W244 and 6.3gr of Silhouette were both almost perfect. I think maybe the W244 was a little flashier than the Silhouette but it was hard to tell during the day, even though it was overcast.

Right now I’m tumbling the brass from yesterday in corn cob (untreated) w/primers. They’ll be an hour, then decap and back in the tumbler for an hour w/ powdered walnut (treated w/aluminum oxide wax rouge). After that they get resized and into the bin; stored for later.

Thanks for the offer but I’ve been working on this project since RMR got those in stock and I have a plan. 👍

I really like W244 in 38 special with a HBWC better than Bullseye or Tite Group. I am going to have to maybe give Silhouette a try.

So far it’s been pretty good. The near-max load was pretty brutal in that aluminum frame Cobra and it dropped off in accuracy at the extreme end even in the Contender. Midrange and upper mid seems to be its happy place.

How do you like Silhouette I have never tried it.
Very good too. Similar to the old Winchester Action Pistol (which it is based on) but with added flash suppression. I liked WAP for 9mm midrange loads and switched to No.5 when WAP went away. I’ll be trying Silhouette for that role soon. I have a bunch of 115gr Russian made bimetallic bullets and about the same number Xtreme 124gr to experiment with.

Bought a pound of Silhouette to try in 9mm , 40 S&W , 38 super and 45 auto . Going to load some 9mm with Missouri 125 gr coated RN & 115 Gr RN .

I have an organized mess waiting in mine. The last few months I've just been piling all the other gun stuff from the basement in there, to move it all out of view of prying eyes, in case we had to have our decrepit old furnace replaced. So far we haven't had an issue, but will probably have the furnace replaced in a couple months any how, as long as it holds out that long anyway.

Otherwise it's just the same old spiders/webs and reloading stuff waiting in there.

I hear you… however, the furnace guy I know; well, we met in a ccw class and have bumped into each other at the range… 😁
I’ve got several batches of brass waiting on me too decide what bullet/powder combo.

I have an island table that sits in the middle of my loading room that I use for things like case prep, sorting brass, ect. Right now it has several plastic tubs of brass waiting on their turn through the tumbler and several empty coffee cans. It makes the room look junked up even though they are lined up neatly!

I have a lot of projects planned and no time for them this week: about 500 gunshow loads in .45ACP from a trade, 72 empty .38Spl from load testing (22 are VERY dirty - HS-6 at low pressure:( ), two dirty guns to clean (S&W 64-3 4” and Taurus M85 2”), and notes to transcribe into my load book. Maybe next weekend. :(
