I have 150 Starline 45/70 waiting to be sized and primed then loaded with Missouri 300 grain LFP and IMR 3031
That was the first cartridge and powder I used when I started reloading in '05. First entry in my reloading log, too. Starline brass, cci LRPs, IMR 3031 and Sierra 300gr sjhpI have 150 Starline 45/70 waiting to be sized and primed then loaded with Missouri 300 grain LFP and IMR 3031
Did it cycle ok?Five test rounds....... in .32 ACP. 1st ones went less than 600 FPS.
What powders do you have? I have some .38spl/110gr jhp data in my lyman #50.I have a new .38Spl load development project in the works. I bought a few 110gr jhp from RMR - a discontinued Winchester bullet designed for standard pressure loads in short barrels - and there’s zero loading data published. I have pretty good selection of the mid-range powders (except the VV N3xx series) and a good testing platform (T/C 10” .357 barrel) and something kinda like a chronograph (Chrony F) so I should be good to start doing research and projectile dissecting.
The goal is a 25yd varmint dissuader with low recoil, low flash, good penetration in flesh but a miss hitting a solid barrier will stop it easily. No ricochet! Velocity goal is 800-1000fps depending on barrel length and pie plate rapid fire, each hand, unsupported in a dark alley.
Basically, a SilverTip.
I’m sticking to the Winchester powders and cases for a sort of “factory duplication” load:What powders do you have? I have some .38spl/110gr jhp data in my lyman #50.
Hmm, not much help on my end. Of the powders you listed, only HS-6. 231 were listed. Have you thought about BE-86? I believe it has flash suppressants.I’m sticking to the Winchester powders and cases for a sort of “factory duplication” load:
.38Spl 110gr. Winchester Kinetic HE JHP, 950fps from a 4” barrel, standard pressure (<17kPSI).
I’ve tested WST, W231, W244, Autocomp, and Ramshot Silhouette (WAP + FS). I still have to test HS-6 (formerly W540) and retest AutoComp because my Chrony battery died.
So far, Silhouette and W244 are clear leaders.
One of my criteria is low flash for low-light conditions.

I really like W244 in 38 special with a HBWC better than Bullseye or Tite Group. I am going to have to maybe give Silhouette a try.I’m sticking to the Winchester powders and cases for a sort of “factory duplication” load:

So far it’s been pretty good. The near-max load was pretty brutal in that aluminum frame Cobra and it dropped off in accuracy at the extreme end even in the Contender. Midrange and upper mid seems to be its happy place.I really like W244 in 38 special with a HBWC better than Bullseye or Tite Group.
How do you like Silhouette I have never tried it.So far it’s been pretty good. The near-max load was pretty brutal in that aluminum frame Cobra and it dropped off in accuracy at the extreme end even in the Contender. Midrange and upper mid seems to be its happy place.
Very good too. Similar to the old Winchester Action Pistol (which it is based on) but with added flash suppression. I liked WAP for 9mm midrange loads and switched to No.5 when WAP went away. I’ll be trying Silhouette for that role soon. I have a bunch of 115gr Russian made bimetallic bullets and about the same number Xtreme 124gr to experiment with. How do you like Silhouette I have never tried it.
Bought a pound of Silhouette to try in 9mm , 40 S&W , 38 super and 45 auto . Going to load some 9mm with Missouri 125 gr coated RN & 115 Gr RN .Very good too. I hear you… however, the furnace guy I know; well, we met in a ccw class and have bumped into each other at the range…I have an organized mess waiting in mine. The last few months I've just been piling all the other gun stuff from the basement in there, to move it all out of view of prying eyes, in case we had to have our decrepit old furnace replaced. So far we haven't had an issue, but will probably have the furnace replaced in a couple months any how, as long as it holds out that long anyway.
Otherwise it's just the same old spiders/webs and reloading stuff waiting in there.
