What do the gunwriters carry?

Massad Ayoob has stated that he carries a Glock 31 with a Glock 33 for backup. He says it has great stopping power and good longe range accuracy and I'm inclined to believe him. For home defense he has this:

I “do firearms” for a living, and the gun I prefer to have at the bedside is a customized Beretta 92 with super-accurate Jarvis barrel and kick-reducing Magna-Port. It has night sights and an attached SureFire flashlight, and is loaded with an extended 20-round magazine of 115 grain +P+ 9mm hollowpoints.

So what do the other gunwriters carry? Colonel Cooper is obvious. How about Clint Smith, Larry Vickers, John Taffin, David Fortier... you get the idea.

Most of them carry what they get paid to write about that month.

Some years ago, there was an artical in some gun rag that ask your very same question..

Seems there was a lot of S&W J-Frame .38 Specials got shook out of peoples pants when it came to "personal favorite all the time carry guns"..

Clint Smith has said his favorite is a 1911, a S&W Model 22 44 Spl, and a .45 Colt SAA at one time or another.
Might have even professed a love for the Springfield XD at one time or another too.

Yeah, Clint Smith carries something different everyday of the week.

Someone tells me they're looking for a shotgun to buy for home defense, and they're looking at models A and B, I just tell them "Buy an 870", and they're like "But this one has all the features" and I'm like "Buy an 870".

The FFL who deos all of my gun transfers also writes for www.gunweek.com He carries a NAA .22 revolver in his pocket and a Detonics Combat Master on his hip.

Maybe instead of the flavor of the week pistol they should carry some spare change so they could afford to pay attention and write about something new and or intresting. Really how many times to we have to read about why a guy who writes for a living likes brand X over brand Y.

At a class last month Larry V. was carrying a Nighthawk 1911 in 9mm (which I believe he said was a pretty recent addition) and a Daniel Defense AR-15.

There's also, perhaps, a difference between a "gun writer" and someone who has "BT-DT" and happens to now write about it. Of course, either can be very informative OR opinionated and full of crap. Caviat Lector!

On a wholly unrelated note, Craig Boddington seems to carry "a little teacup!"

Ironically, he states of the revolver, "...you better hang on tight. It’s quite a handful with three-inch .410 loads." Somehow I don't think that grip is helping.

I believe there was an article in on of the gun mags about this a couple of years ago. Ayoob said that he tests so many guns that he basically just carries what he's reviewing any given week. Clint Smith has also professed a love for 1911's and the Springfield XD.

I'm carrying a Smith & Wesson M38 as I write this.
I often carry one of my Smith & Wesson M649s.
Now and then I carry both the M38 and a 649, or a 649 in a pants pocket and a Smith M15 two inch in a coat pocket.

I have other guns but keep going back to Smith revolvers.

It is an interesting question: "What do the gun-wonks carry?"

I am a CCW instructor and back in the day I carried exclusively a Colt Combat Commander .45ACP. (In a modified Bianchi shoulder holster)

Now that I am older and have additional pieces, my in-mufti carry gun is one of my S&W J frame 5-shooters with 125 grain .38 Special +P Gold Dots loaded up and in two speed loaders.

I'm a professional writer and photographer.

I edit HuntX3 Magazine as most of you probably already know from my posts about the magazine. I also Associate Edit a paintball magazine, PaintballX3.

I'm an avid firearms enthusiast and I've shot for many years, but I've never "been there and done that" because while I've worked on military bases and have many friends in the military and law enforcement, I've never been "in." I have the utmost respect for those in the military and law enforcement and rely on them to teach me as much as they are willing and that I can absorb.

All I can do is go with the advice of good, trusted friends who are professionals, who have been there and done that, and mate that with personal, first-hand knowledge and testing that I do personally, at my range.

Leaving the house in heavy winter clothing I have a stainless Colt Commander .45. In thinner clothing and warmer weather, I've recently purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P9C 9mm with which I'm quite impressed, that rides in an inside the waistband holster. Laying by the bedside at all times is a stainless Taurus Model 65 .357 Magnum with a four inch barrel and Hogue grip. Over the years I've also owned a Glock 27, a Glock 22, a Rossi .38 and an FN FiveseveN.

I seem to recall reading that Mass was all hot in love with the Ruger P97 at some point. Now, I don't remember if that was his duty gun or what. Also, I do remember reading about that J-frame Smith thing!!!

Massad Ayoob likes to talk about what he is personally carrying. It is no secret that it is something different quite a bit of the time. I can remember numerous articles of which he states he carries or is at least carrying that day is HK P2000SK, every Glock, Ruger SP101, Ruger P90 (duty gun) Ruger P345 (duty gun), many Smith snubbies, I have seen a Taurus 85(?) in his shoes by his hotel bed in a show I think. The list goes on.....

I bet Patrick Sweeny if given the choice would take a 1911.

I deal with several guns each year, but only try carrying a very few for a day or three to check holster feel if the need is indicated.
I see no need to swap around & prefer to stick with one platform I know in case it's actually needed. For me, a Gun Of The Week Program is not a good idea.
My regular is a Colt .45 ACP GM.

There was a magazine article a few years ago that discussed what the writers carried. Most said they carried what they were testing at the time. Other said if they were instructors they carried according to what they were teaching at the time. More often than not a Glock due to a lot of law enforcement agencies used them. I notice a common thread most owned or carried at least one 5 shot snub and more often than not a sub compact Glock. I dont remember which mag.

Why dos anyone care what gun writers carry? They are paid to write about what their employer wants to promote. With a few exceptions they have less real world experience than the average enthusiast.
