I have been shooting a long time. Of course we have different interest. And, in that tradition, all firearms are fun to own and shoot. some though, seem to get an undue amount of attention. The gun that so many people want to own that I just don't "get" is the SKS. Just for amusement I have put a poll up to see what you think is the most over rated firearm.

I'll start the fight - Glock.

Someone will immediately come back with - used by more LE agencies than all others combined. Probably true but not because it's "best" it's because they were the low bidder that met the specs - period. Good guns to be sure, just not the greatest thing since sliced bread and kool-aid.

The 1911 has been around in various forms for nearly 100 years and has stood the test of time, it's reputation is certainly earned. And no I don't one a tricked out custom 1911, just an el cheapo RIA compact I picked up last weekend cheap...

Number one over rated is the mighty Austrian entry the Gaston ......(you know).
Number two over rated is the clunky non ergonomical SKS
Tied for number three over rated are the overpriced SIG and H&K
:fire::neener::banghead:

Yeah... Desert Eagle.

I mean, whats the point?

SKS. I don't see the practical application, or utility of this rifle. Big heavy sluggish rifle, intermediate round, lower capacity (traditionally), ugly as all hell. Oh wait, they're CHEAP and you can pretty easily get them sent to your house with a C&R.

H&K Mk. 23
Ridiculously huge. The entire company just has a silly stigma around them, and I their pistols certainly didn't earn the stigma, their rifles did. But the Mk. 23 is so huge that most people can't shoot it well. Costs...? $2,000? There are plenty of guns out there with the same specs that go bang every time, and are equally as accurate, for 1/4th to 1/3rd the price.

Barrett's semi-auto .50 cal sniper rifles
Do you want to be accurate or do you want to put alot of big rounds down range accurately? Depending, either get a bolt-action or hop on a damned SAW 249. If its far enough away to need the .50BMG round, its far enough away to make sure you have the more accurate rifle. If its close enough that you need to let loose ten rounds in under 10-12 seconds, its close enough to be killed by a 7.62 NATO round.

Glock 18.
I still want one. I don't care if I can't hit anything and burn $20 in 2 seconds. :D

Yeah, I'll say it....(donning flame-suit)

I think the 1911 is overrated.

to be fair, I don't have much experience with one. Maybe 50 or so rounds through other peoples. I don't like the ergonomics, and the grip safety irritates my hand unless I wear gloves.

That, and I'm a diehard wheelie guy. Autos are fun, but my first love spins around.

oh come on HK makes excellent guns, they just don't like civilians!

and I'll second the super-expensive 1911s, I don't get them, I know they're wonderful, but if I was going to spend $2000 on a gun it would be a MK 23 or some sort of awesome rifle, maybe the FS2000 which looks so good.

Anything that a twerp comes into a gun shop looking to buy because they saw it in a movie.

Or when people want a glock (great pistols), because it can supposedly fire underwater......

What? If you are underwater bud.... you have bigger problems.

Ah, I'm thinkin' this thread may just turn into another opportunity for the weekly 1911s - Why?; 1911 vs. Glock; S&W revolvers vs. Ruger revolvers; AR vs. AK; H&K vs. SIG; anything made by Taurus sucks; Winchester vs. Remington vs. Marlin, and Remington vs. Mossberg arguments to come out ... sorry, but threads likely to degenerate into denigration of one brand or platform don't seem to contribute much these day ...

Have to say Glocks also. Not to say I don't own several but the almost cult like following I don't get. It's just a gun after all.

i should probably throw myself in a volcano rather than bear the flames but...

AR-15

jam prone, underpowered, fragile.

say what you want about the glock and ak but you can fight someone in a (sandbox/mud pit/gravel pit) (buttstroke/pistol whip) them and kill them with one shot. the ar-15 not so much, and its more spendy to boot!

now why do i have 3 ar's and only 2 ak's ?:scrutiny:

Benelli SBE

Outrageous price, especially since the Franchi can be had for 1/2, and the Stoeger can be had for 1/3. Fact is about 85% of the people that buy these things will never have any use whatsoever for a 3 1/2" load. Not that it is not a great shotgun, but for the money it ain't "all that".

I'll pick a discontinued product - shouldn't ruffle any feathers that way.

Python.

The good ones are reasonably nice but they're nowhere near as nice as the reverential whisperings on the intr4w3b would lead one to believe. Probably not too bad provided one's expectations aren't unrealistic.
