Glock - most over rated and over hyped, but apparently genius marketing or they wouldn't be over rated and over hyped.

Gotta go with Glocks and 1911s. And the 1911 is my favorite semi auto, and I have plenty of respect for Glocks (grip angle just doesn't work for me). Because I say they are overrated does not mean they are crap. I just don't think either is the be all end all of handguns. Nice? Certainly. Perfect for everyone? No. There are lots of nice guns out there, and to say a 1911 or Glock is better than them all is pushing it, IMO.

Also, the accuracy potential of a snub nosed 38 is often vastly underrated. Plenty of people think that a snub can't hit 4 x 8 sheet of plywood from 10 feet, that they are a "belly gun". Though that may be their primary purpose (up close and personal, last ditch self defense), they are definitely capable of much more. A finely made snubby should group an inch or less at 25 yds.

As for harnessing the accuracy, well, that is up to the guy or gal behind the trigger.

AK's are in my opinion over rated more than AR's, I believe AR's are under rated for their reliability and effectiveness.

I don't think either are over or underrated overall, but I do agree with your comment about AR's being underrated as far as their reliability goes. I'd also say that the accuracy of the average AK (or SKS) is underrated. An AK or SKS may not be as accurate as an AR (or many other rifles for that matter), but nor are they as wildly innaccurate as people think.

Hi-point.

The fact that it is even sold (as a weapon) is a the sole indisputable indication of being overrated. It is nothing more than novelty book end.

Kimber - not that I don't think they make good firearms, its just that every single person I know or seen who owns one acts like they've been entrusted with the almighty EXCALIBUR.

The 1911 the techs way out of date. I dont get what an 800$ 1911 can do that a CZ or any other .45 caliber pistol cant. I wont even rant about the .45 cartridge itself...

Winchester Model 12

It's a nice pump gun, but it doesn't fit everybody by any stretch, and it's certainly not the end-all of shotguns.

Remington 700

Yes, if you are going to do a custom build, you may have to go with a 700 so you can get a lot of high-tech stocks and easy-to-find handmade parts. But if you just want to buy a decent bolt gun, your money can be much better spent.

Remington 870

Good pump gun for everything from trap shooting to HD. But it seems that polls here often rate it "the best shotgun" or the like. Come on, people. That's like rating the Toyota Corolla as the "best car in the world." Toyota deserves praise for building a high-mileage, reliable, even fun and comfortable car for 15 grand. But it's not a Lambo or anything, even if, dollar for dollar, it actually offers more than a Lamborghini.

Ruger GP100

Strong, 100 bucks less than a Smith, but it's clunky as all get-out.

Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't and don't own one or more of the above. I'm just looking at what I think is overrated. That doesn't make a gun bad by any means.

Glock. It lead the way, but at this point it is no greater than many other poly-pistols, and some, like HK P30, are far better than the Glock. There is no reason it should still get the accolades it does. Even the vaunted "it was chosen by the vast majority of LEOs" excuse is only because Glock practically gave them away to departments. Glock is most popular because of cost, not quality.

Glock.
I just don't think a polymer handgun is worth 500 dollars.

Same thing with a AK. It was designed to be a cheap easily made despensable gun yet here they are worth 400 to 700 dollars. I just don't think so. I do understand the parts game takes a toll on the price but I still wont pay that much for one.

The SKS is over rated too. Out dated, heavy, and only holds 10 rounds in a fixed magazine. But at least they are cheap and have mostly milled parts. For 200 dollars you don't get a ultra tacticool high capacity sub moa death ray Snake Pliskin or Geco45 would be proud of but you do get a good reliable firearm. I wont pay more then 200 dollars for a Yugo or a Chinese and since the ammo has gone up so much I don't see me buying anymore.

The M-1, the M-14, the AR, and the Winchester '94. I just don't get it. They're all serviceable, but peoples opinions seem to fall into the perennial "I have tied my self esteem to this gun for whatever nostalgic reason, and anyone who disagrees directly insults me" whenever there's a debate.

AR's and glocks are the most overrated firearms IMHO. But I will confess to being a wood and metal snob, no plastic for me...and I don't care for semi-auto handguns anyways.

Had a Sig 229,the sights were crappy, trigger sucked, and had some FTE's in at least 50 fired, and to bulky for CCW.

+1 on the MP5. I don't quite get why it was so popular in the late 80s, early 90s. I can see that it's probably a lot easier to handle than a STEN or Thompson... but I can't understand the lovefest for it. Especially compared with the Uzi, which strikes me as a handier gadget. I'd be pleased as punch to get any of the above, of course.

S&W 642

It is no more than a snub nosed .38 has ever been; at twice the price. It's just another snubbie!

Flame suite is now on.

I picked 1911 even though I own one and love it. I chose it specifically for the $1500+ models. I have shot my brothers stepdads Kimber and it shot nicely, but I am just as good with my GI model from SA :neener:
