Wow, another completely subjective thread. Maybe that is overrated.
I will say 45ACP for hand guns because so many think size matters when it's simply not always true.
And I will say 30.06 for rifles because most .308's will do the same thing but are easier/cheaper to come by, while being just as accurate.
As far as shotguns 12g has got to be the most popular and therefore "overrated". But its actually the most versatile shotgun caliber ever made.
