My overall preference for "total butt stomping" would be a 12 gauge, 18" pump (probably Rem. 870, or others). Choose your own shot #. I like 00 Buck to #4 Buck.

Also depends on the situation.

Close up and personal, 1911 .45 ACP.

Asleep and by my bed, S&W Model 10 (4" Bull Bl.), with .38 Special +P.

A more distant oncoming threat, SKS or Mauser 8mm with scope (with my current collection).

Light everyday carry, S&W Model 38 Airweight (or Kel-Tec P-32).

What are your choices, and why ?:)

Whatever is closest when I need it.

If I have time to stare into the boom closet and choose, I should be leaving.

I'll use whatever I can as the need arises, chances are it will be something on my person or something I have set up for ready access.

348 or 45-70 in the mountains or as required elsewhere. 30-30 or 44 carbine around the yard. 44 Smith or 45 Ruger for belt gun.

My main concerns aren't on two feet. If that comes up, the critter guns should work OK.

Lets just say I have 50+ guns in about every caliber, ga, & type to choose from.

But for 'Bumps in the Night'?
I sleep with a SIG P232 .380 ACP with night sights, & two extra mags under my pillow.

But like the man said, a pistol is only to fight your way to a Rifle.

And that would be an old SP-1 Colt AR-15 Carbine.
Or, an old folding stock Ruger Mini-14.

Neither one has ever missed a lick in the 35+ years I have owned them both.

^^^It will be a matter of the situation, preparation, and accessibility that determines what is used. From my bedroom in the evenings, a semi-auto 12ga with a light is on the ready.

There is only one answer, what ever you have with you. You obviously are not walking around with all of your weapons, nor do you have the option of choosing when something bad happens, If you do then it's not really an emergency.

I try to have something on me or close to me that I have trained and practiced with. I want it to be efficacious. I don't want to be running around looking for the wonder butt stomper.

If I have time to plan to get gun XY or Z - I might have time to flee in terror in realistic scenarios.

Good answer, rc.

You jump around threads faster than a banana spider. You know your stuff, and have given very helpful info, as always, in the past my friend. Thank you for that.:)

Strategies?

Tactics?

Training?

No hardware specific stuff in that list. Sorry, but there are other places here for hardware specific questions...

Basic answer always is, use what you are best with, and if you think something else is a better option, train and practice with it until that is what you are best with.

And spend at least as much money, time, effort and cogitation on hardening your home as you do on the last ditch means of defense you choose...
