I have a Remington 870 12 gauge pump withan 18 inch barrel.Federal OO Buck shells
I also have my pet Sig P200 ST.Hornady 230 gn.+P TAP JH ammo.
But these are basically unloaded.
I have a Special Forces Ranger Tomahawk, and a Cold Steel Tanto Knife right behind my Bed Headboard.
Also a heavy flaslight.
If i have enough time, and if i need too,i'll load the shotgun or the Siggie.

my CCW piece. I figure I don't want to have my HD gun laying around when I'm not there (in case of a break-in).... and I'm already very familiar with it.

So it's a G27 with a Glock mag extension (adds 1 round) a lasermax laser and Tru-Glo TFO's. Plus I have an extra mag for it always loaded also with the Glock factory mag extension.

My primary home defense weapon is a HK USPc .45 loaded with one in the tube, decocked, and the safety on. I also have a Mossberg 590 at the ready. I can also access an AR-15, AK-47, Benelli M4, and several loaded handguns. The HK is the only weapon in the house that ever has a round "in the pipe."

1. S&W 586 6" loaded with .357 115g JHP
2. Baikal 20" coach gun with exposed, functional hammers; loaded with winchester #1 buck; hammers down, safety off

...both are easily accessible from where i sleep...

I don't own any home defense weapons, but from what I've been told from people who's opinions I trust, 00 buckshot in a 12 guage is your best option save a good revolver. I honestly want a Remington 870 Synthetic 18" model. Those are sexy.

I've read from articles (not gun magazines) that a revolver can lay dormant in a drawer for years and will still fire when you really need it to. Can anyone confirm this?

I have a couple that serve the home defense purpose. My primary gun is the Mossberg 500 with #4 buckshot, loaded tube, empty chamber. I figure I'll rack the slide for extra intimidation factor.:D I also have my XD-40 with 155 grain Winchester Ranger's, two 12 round magazines loaded. The pistol stays in the dresser right next to my bed. I don't have any kids in my house, so I'm not afraid to have them loaded and ready.

1st line: a German Shepherd and a Boxer/Pit mix. They're not too fond of uninvited visitors.

2nd line: Hi Power in the nightstand. Hi Point carbine loaded in the safe. If I'm on the first floor, the dogs should buy me 15 seconds to get to and open the safe.

3rd line: I live in a very low crime area. Home invasions and burglaries aren't too common around here.

Hi Rob86

You can leave a revolver sitting around for a length of time.
But you have to " Rotate " your bullets with a fresh batch ever so often or they will swell-in-place,become stuck, and very diffecult to remove.;)

I have a Chas. Daly 12 ga. with 5 rounds on 00 at my bedside and my EAA 10 mm in my nightstand.
Won't say what else someone might run into, gotta keep some things a surprise.

I have 7 rounds of 00 buck in my 18" Winchester Defender sitting next to my bed, and another one just like it in the safe in my bedroom. Both of them with the hammer down on an empty chamber. I also have an XD-40, ready to go, either on my nightstand or in a holster mounted underneath it, maybe a cocked and locked 1911 on my nightstand if I've bothered to take it out of the safe. I also have an AK in the safe, with a dozen loaded mags nearby if I need them, and I have 150 additional rounds of 00 buck if I go through the first 14.

I live in a low crime area, so I'm not really as worried or paranoid as I might look, but what's the point of having self-defense guns if you're not able to use them?

I keep all my hunting and target guns unloaded, and all my defensive guns loaded and ready to go. But then again, I don't have kids, or roommates (other than my girlfriend, who knows how to use all my guns), and I seldom have houseguests or visitors of any kind. Were any of those things to change, so would my gun-storage habits.

I would like to get a dog at some point though...

Hi sm,

i wouldn't feel totally confident with just a single shot.
You might want to supplement your shotgun with and easy to reach small revolver.Keep it on you, maybe like in a Mexican Draw position on your waistband of what ever you're wearing.

I honestly want a Remington 870 Synthetic 18" model. Those are sexy.

I recommend you get out more often. A remington 870 can be described in many ways but sexy is not one of them. Try to meet some nice young women. You will then be able to differentiate between "sexy" and "utilitarian".

Mossberg 500A next to the bed. Makarov with Barnaul HP on the night stand. Mosin-Nagant M44 with Czech heavy ball in the closet. And my two inch Smith & Wesson M&P hidden some place accessible.

What do you use for defense against homes?

Man, I don't think I have anything big enough. :D

Me: .357 mag revolver and levergun are the goto weapons. I probably need to use my shotgun instead.
