Ruger P-97 for the most part. A loaded Remington 870 is handy just in case there's time to grab it. I'd rather have more than a handgun, but the handgun is next to the bed and I can have it in my hand faster than I can clear the sleep from my eyes anyway.
I have my AK with a 75 round drum in it, but I keep the drum unwound. I figure if I ever need to step up that far, a couple seconds winding it is no big deal.
I also have 2 large old english sheepdogs that tend to deter most problems and would at least delay them long enough for me to act. Although I consider them family so their purpose is as alarms only. I'll deal with the problem myself rather than chance them getting hurt.
The most important parts of my home defense, besides the dogs, is something I encourage everyone to consider. An alarm, and X-10 controllers. The alarm is self explanatory. The X-10's are an inexpensive way to control the electronics in your house. I keep a wireless X-10 remote next to the gun. In a "situation" I can remotely turn on any light in the house. This puts an intruder suddenly standing in a lighted room, while I'm standing outside of it in the dark. No flashlight giving away my position. Of course I carry a flashlight just in case, but it's sure better to light up the intruder with the X-10's if possible. Even if you can't have an alarm for whatever reason, I encourage you to look into adding the inexpensive X-10 controllers to your home. They aren't permanent, so they're even ideal for renters.
A few years back I actually had to put this system to the test.
