As Alaskans we're getting checks for $1305 this year out of the Permanent Fund. I usually buy a firearm with it. This year I'm at an impasse between several choices. I already have a good trail gun in .450 Marlin and an excellent CCW piece, along with a plinker and some black powder rifles and some C&R's.

What do you think?

Oh. I thought you wanted a gun that cost no more than a lifejacket.:D

You lack one thing. A shotgun. $1300 will buy you a fine shoptgun, so you can go ptarmigan hunpting.

Or, save the money for a hunt. I wouldn't put down a deposit. Guided hunts are in the ****ter right now, with ridiculous discounts. A man with a handful of cash could probably go on a great hunt, on moment's notice, for a hell of a bargain price, if he walked up to a guide with that wad of green.

In this town I can't even find the ammo, so I pretty much have to handload everything. Even .357 has run dry. But thankfully I'm well stocked on primers, powder and brass.

I need to move to Alaska. Here in Utah, we are gradually receding from the low-tax goodness of the past. We have seen nothing but the local gov taking more and more lately. I am glad to see it is not like that everywhere.

I agree that you should spend it on some ammo or reloading supplies.

Currently I'm lusting rather mightily after any of the following:

-JP Rifles JP15
-Sako TRG 22 rechambered for .260 Remington or 6mm CM
-Georgia Precision Arms Base Custom (again, chambered for either of the two aforementioned cartridges.)

*sigh*

I'm leaning towards the CZ but I'm trying to find out what the twist rate is on the 7x64 Lux. I want to shoot CROSSBOW BOLTS out of this thing!

I dont see an AR on your current inventory, maybe you should look at that. If not I would go with a shotgun. Also I would suggest that you take 10% of the money and write a check to your favorite gun rights group. Weather that be NRA, GOA, JPFO or whatever.

"but you'll still need brass, powder, and primers to have ammo."

Sorry for not using the preffered nomenclature.
I guess since I wrote bullets instead of ammunition that makes my point less valid.
The point I wanted to make is that there a lot guns I would like to have but I know it's probably more practical to buy ammunition for the ones I already own. My .02.

I understood you. A few years back I would have been very wise to do exactly that, but it's too late now. I've just about gotten to a point where I don't shoot any factory loads except for the .22 LR. I used to be able to get 50 rounds of .357 practice ammo for $12, now you can't find them at all.

My Big Bore .450 fills all my thumper needs, so I hadn't really considered a new shotty. I use my CZ 452 death ray for the stupid chickens and squirrels. Very low class of me I know ;-) But if I got a fancy shotgun I'd have to start saying "what what" and hire a gun bearer.

I got a S&W 1911 PD (Commander Size). Already have a Para 14-45, so I wanted something easier to carry. I'm satisfied with it so far. Just wish we had an indoor range somewhere . . . it's been really nasty weather lately and I've only managed to get out once to Birchwood so far.

I like the CZ 550 myself. I know you already have a big bore rifle, but I am really liking the Ruger Hawkeye in .375 ruger so I'll throw that one out there.

I'm surprised to not see anybody recommend investing a decent chunk of that in some firearm classes. Maybe a defensive pistol or shotgun class?

There's no substitute for good training. =)
