OK, the long winded topic asks the whole question. I have some 223 blanks but no blank adapter. Somewhere in the back of my mind I am thinking that the adapter is just a safety feature, and the rifle will still function fine without it.

Also, just off the top of my head, would the muzzle blast kill barn mice? Seems like I could have a lot of fun with that.

will not cycle, not enough gas pressure to cycle the action with out the adapter.

And yeah if you got close enough it will kill things. DO NOT go around shooting your friends with blanks you will have fewer friends afterwards for one reason or another.

Will go bang, but won't cycle.

I don't think it would be a reliable mouse killer, but blast and crap thrown downrange does present a real safety hazard and likely would kil the occasional mouse, range depending.

the muzzle blast from a .45LC blank is enough to pop a balloon at around 20 feet. If your nice and close it might just kill a mouse. Or you could just use a revolver with shotshells.

A turn-down blank adaptor will direct the wad to the ground. Without it, you will fire that wad (piece of cardboard?) at whatever you are aiming at.

.223 blanks aren't very loud, either.

They will dirty up your weapon. Depending on the source they may be corrosive (not likely if US issue).

People who have been in service have seen stupid people do dumb things with blanks when bored; they ARE dangerous. I would afford them the same respect I do any live ammo.

I know it's winter any everyone is bored; kill the mice with a bb gun or something more challenging like a blow gun or slingshot.

In the Swedish army we have red wood tipped blanks used with a blank firing adaptor. Without the adaptor they desintegrated anyway, but splinters went a couple of yards... Not good for the eyes.

I´ve seen those for sale in the US in 6.5x55.. Helluva muzzle flash and the barrel gets DIRTY!!!!

If I´m correct the US Army uses crimped blanks. There could be a possibility that a case of low quality could lose pieces of brass, which could travel a shorter distance... But the main problem would be if you got some object obstructed in the barrel... Dirt, ice or similar.. Then you have a dangerous projectile..

If your nice and close it might just kill a mouse.

Blanks'll kill a bit more than mice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon-Erik_Hexum

Hexum died after shooting himself in the head with a prop gun loaded with blanks on the set of the CBS series Cover Up, ...
Hexum, who played a weapons expert, was said to constantly be playing with the guns as if they were toys and once angered Jennifer O'Neill so much that she chastised him on-set for his carelessness.

Safety rule #1, IIRC.

We use them for training. The blank adapter is for safety. We do use the crimped blanks which jam so much they wont let us use them on 3 round burst. I would use a blank adapter for safety reasons and to reduce fouling in your rifle from all the extra powder. They make a real mess though and dont be suprised if you spend 45 minutes cleaning all of the parts afterword.

Do not handle a firearm while ignorant or stupid.

Quite similar to line from an old Larry Niven story, "...stupidity carries the death penalty."

Except, that penalty may extend beyond the stupid ones themselves.:uhoh:

Don't know about mice but do know a section of cleaning rod can kill a porcupine when fired from an M16A2 using blanks. Would not suggest it as it is dumb and dangerous, like most of the stuff Infantry guys do when they are bored and have downtime.

Cleaning rods also kill scorpions, field mice, jack rabbits, and even one yote I know of at the NTC in Death Valley. Don't ask, I won't tell, but I was a young, dumb private once, and plenty bored. ;)

Don't forget Brandon Lee was killed with blanks (I think, too lazy to look it up)

I say if you just want to go bang, go get a blank adapter, easilly found on teh net or at the next gun show

bones. you kill me! urban legend has Ft. Sherman Jungle School (in Panama) grunts getting court-marshalled for killing feces-throwing monkeys with cleaning rods. classic.

I didn't personally have monkey problems. I followed wise advice from Chef on "Apocalypse Now": DON'T GET OFF THE BOAT!

Firing an M16 with GI blanks and no BFA?

Who would do such a thing?

If you happen to be sitting in the rain bored out of your skull on a training operation and happen to have a small fruit juice can and a P38 can openner handy you might cut the top of the can out and drape it over the muzzle to keep out the rain. You might let an aggressor get within about fifteen yards of you and honestly acciedentally lauch said can at him, hit him, have him stagger back in suprise, fire off a whole magazine burst with his M16 with BFA and have him scream at you like a little boy playing in the back yard "I shot you!" while you and your battle buddy can hardly see through the tears of laughter.

You might be discussing the possible effects of launching the Black (or later red) plastic muzzle covers with blanks with a REMF that was standing next to your home sweat hole in the ground when yur battle buddy asked, "you really, truely, positively want to know?" and on recieving an affirmative reply you battle buddy shoots said REMF with said Plastic muzzle cover from about two meters away resulting in the REMF being evacuated. DId not break the bone or even skin as it turned out but caused a massive and serious bruse that completely encircled the calf just above the boot top. Missed by that much. Remarkably no charges were filled.

BTW we found we could shoot ball through the plastic muzzle covers and still hit a kneeling man target at 100 meters. Caps appearently were blown of by air pressure in front of the bullet. Some were shot squarely through the middle others at odd angles including through one side and some were not hit. We got a new bag of still fuzzy black ones and wee disposing of our shiney old ones on a pop up range as every one wanted to know.

But back to blanks. They are not toys. They can and do cause deaths and serious injury when used improperly. You don't need to find but one or two spent blanks with one or more folds from their crimp missing to begin comptemplating where that bit of cartridge brass went. Further anything else that gets in a muzzlle from field use gets launched as well.

We were taught to stop using blanks if any one got within ten yards of us BFA or not. Some insisted it was OK as long as you shot the rifles up or otherwise not pointed at the opposing force man, but with the BFA used on the M16 that may well have actually pointed the vent at the person.

The key is to remember blanks are not kids caps. They are potentually dangerous ammunition.

and they will not funtion your M16 with out a BFA or something unauthorized in or on the muzzle to build up enough pressure

Oh, quick point, it is NOT reccomended that you reload using blank cartridges.

Typically most blanks are made of a cheaper/, thinne, lower quality brass as they have no need to tolerate the higher pressures of "real" rounds.

You CAN reload but head separation, burst cartidges, bust up brass in the receiver etc will await you.

every blank i have fired without a BFA never ejected on its own (training, burial details, etc) blank rounds we use in the military are crimped at the ends, no wadding. imagine what a M249 SAW barrel would look like after firing 3 barrels (200 rds)of blanks WITH wadding into it. however if you want a cheap, quiet and more effective/less collateral way to get mice indoors try these

snake charmer shotshells work even better

blanks seem silly and harmless but accidents happen, i wouldn't rodent hunt with those things. they'll leave a horrible mess in your barrel and no one likes cleaning carbon up if they didn't hit anything.

we do it every time a brother falls. you'll notice Soldiers manually cycle the weapons during 21 gun salutes.

phaed,

If you are not going to read the whole post don't bother replying.

Had you continued to read you would have noted that the comment "Who would do such a thing?" was inteneded as humor.

I have manually cycled the M16A1 , M-14, and M-1 rifles during salutes myself. I have seen others fire salutes with BFAs.

Just trying to be morose?

5.56 blanks do not have a wad. They do have powder and primer strong enough to cycle the action if you have a BFA attached.

During training in 1985 I had another guy firing blanks at me from about 20 feet during an ambush drill. The third round he fired was a live round (somehow mixed into his blanks or loaded carelessly). The flash supressor and BFA when by my head. Had he not had the BFA I would be dead today. Yes he was up stink creek no paddle in sight He just retired as an army ranger a few years ago but I bet he will never forget that day.
