What Is An SKS Good For?

These carbines are a whole lot of fun. I enjoy beating around with mine from time to time.

This was a beautiful fall day a few years back. I decided to take my Russian friends out for a ride.

"...what is it good for?" Some of you guys watch too many Seinfeld re-runs at dinner time.

You should be reading THR, Surplusrifle and Gunandgame, instead.

an sks(s) is good for giving out to neighbors in a REALLY bad situation to defend nighborhood.

cost is good if you dont care much for looks.

cost of ammo is some of the cheapest centerfire out therr.

Mine throws the shell cases straight up when ejecting, so its good for getting a whack to the head every now and then.

But honestly, I love that rifle. If they were made brand new I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Sadly, I only ever find one that takes ak mags when I'm low on cash...

Glad to see some people on here are keeping their sks's original wood. So much more "beautiful" that way. And as its intended to be. A lot more fun to use it with a ten round stripper clip via 1940's style than cheap magazines that turn it in to a ak/sks blasphemous monster...but I digress.

RP88,
I'm going to run out right now and purchase some grenades.

They are still comparably cheap, dependable, and accurate enough for plinking. The ammo is still cheap, and easily available. Most situations won't require more than 10 rapid fire rounds, without time to reload with a stripper clip.

How many of us have actually needed a self-defense rifle in America? The popular rifles, with their 30 and 40 round magazines are essentially wallet drainers, and little else.

I think a more appropriate question would be: What were they good for?

In the ol' days you could get them for cheap and shoot them for cheap. Now they are way overpriced for the rifle and the ammo is hit or miss.

Nonetheless they are a good rifle for what they are.

you can still find them fairly cheap.

My like-new Russian one did cost quite a bit ($330ish), but my new Yugo came to me $185 after it was all said and done.

If you go by the fact that ALL guns cost more nowadays, the SKS is still a bargain alternative for a semi-auto hunting rifle or truck/ranch rifle.
